Talking tech since 2003

Today, Apple announced that it had broken yet another record, moving over 10 million iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus handsets over the device’s weekend launch. That figure comes only days after Apple broke previous pre-order records for the iPhone 6. Chances are you’re actually reading this on an iPhone 6 right now. Hell, I might even be writing this on an iPhone 6 (I’m not).

apple-iphone-6A post on TechCrunch reports that last year’s iPhone 5s and 5C sold 9 million during launch weekend, while the iPhone 5 launch in 2012 moved 5 million units. In short, this is a pretty big victory for Apple – and not really at all surprising.

Tim Cook had this to say on the occasion:

“Sales for iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus exceeded our expectations for the launch weekend, and we couldn’t be happier. We would like to thank all of our customers for making this our best launch ever, shattering all previous sell-through records by a large margin. While our team managed the manufacturing ramp better than ever before, we could have sold many more iPhones with greater supply and we are working hard to fill orders as quickly as possible.”

That’s not surprising, either. Only a few days ago, reports hit of manufacturing issues hitting Foxconn, not to mention the many rumors of similar problems plaguing Apple’s manufacturing partners in the run-up to the iPhone 6 announcement.

applewatch-closeupAs Foxconn and Apple’s other supply chain partners work things out, expect the number of iPhone 6 handsets you see in the wild to go way up. Meanwhile, the widespread iPhone 6 adoption also means that the time may be truly right for the launch of the Apple Watch, coming in early 2015. While the Apple Watch would work with all model of iPhone 5 and up, the huge number of iPhone 6 buyers point to the huge demand there is for the latest and greatest Apple device. That means that all those people might not balk at shelling out a few hundred more bucks to get the coolest new device out there.

All this iPhonery and Apple Watchnanigans…it’s hard to stay true to my Android Love, you guys.
