VLC
We’ve all been there. You have some kind of media file that you’re trying to open on your computer and none of the default players will play it. It happens in Windows Media Player on a Windows PC. It happens in iTunes on a Mac. It even happens on iPhones, iPads and Android devices. Except it wouldn’t if you had downloaded VLC.
VLC is an open-source, cross-platform media player that really takes that “cross-platform” thing to heart. The app is available… deep breath… on: Windows, Mac OS X, iOS, Android, Linux, BSD, BeOS, OS/2, Solaris, Syllable and QNX. That’s right. VLC is available on operating systems that you probably never heard of before reading this page.
But what really makes VLC so great is not just its cross-platform presence, but the fact that it can play almost anything you throw at it. That feeling you get when your default media player can’t play a certain file? You get the opposite feeling when using VLC. I’m sure there’s something really obscure that VLC can’t play out of the box, but for the most part, it’s an app that will rarely let you down.
Because it’s available for so many platforms, we’re linking the download button below to the VLC download page. From there, you can choose your OS and snag this treasure of a media player for your PC, Mac, smartphone or tablet.
