Talking tech since 2003

The James Bond films have been associated with Omega watches for over 20 years, but it turns out that 007 isn’t the only secret agent to wear the latest and coolest timepiece. Kingsman: The Golden Circle will open in cinemas on September 22, and in addition to the explosions, car chases, and insane stunts we’re likely to see, we’ll also catch a glimpse at a brand new special edition smartwatch from Tag Heuer.

Tag Heuer’s smartwatch, titled the Connected Modular 45, has tried its best to rival the mighty Apple Watch as a contender in the escalating smartwatch market, but that’s indeed a tough nut to crack. Whilst the Kingsman Connected has everything you’d expect from a modern smartwatch – games, GPS, interchangeable watch faces, etc. – it is rather expensive at $3,650. Certainly, cheaper Connected watches do exist, as it is possible to find one on a second-hand retail site, but these are more likely to be Tag Heuer’s first Connected model released in 2015 – a fine smartwatch, sure, but if you want that shiny new Kingsman model, you might need to start saving now.

It seems, however, that the Kingsman Connected isn’t meant for the average Joe, so to speak, but a man who simply oozes sophistication and class, that is, according to Tag Heuer CEO Jean-Claude Biver, who said: “The intersection between Kingsman and Tag Heuer speaks to what defines a gentleman today: a combination of prestige, avant-garde and access to a connected world.”

Guess that’s most of us then, right?

Regardless of what you may think of the price, there’s no denying that the Kingsman Connected definitely looks pretty. We’re talking rose gold lugs, a matte black body, and a choice of either an orange leather strap or brown leather sports strap. Of course, let’s not forget the Kingsman ‘K’ logo stamped on the back and the very fancy box it comes in. Lastly, for some reason, the watch vibrates and makes a small animation every day at 10:10. So there’s that to look forward to, we suppose.

All in all, the Kingsman Connected model is, in essence, exactly what the Kingsman movies are all about: nice to look at, a bit over the top, classy, and ultimately – cool, but not everyone’s cup of tea. Tag Heuer is clearly going down a different path than their smartwatch rivals, choosing to differentiate themselves from the Apple Watch and other Android Wear smartwatches by sticking to their guns and releasing incredibly luxurious watches. So, let’s see how this smartwatch saves the world when The Golden Circle hits cinemas in September.
