Talking tech since 2003

Earlier this year, I switched mobile carriers and got myself a Nexus 5 smartphone, probably the best handset I’ve ever had since jumping into the smartphone world from my dear, departed Palm Centro. However, now that Google has embraced the future with the Motorola-made Nexus 6, the Nexus 5’s days are officially numbered: Google has confirmed that the device is officially out of production.

According to a post on TechRadar, the Nexus 5 is now a limited time deal kind of thing. The site confirmed it with a Google spokesperson, who said, “once they are gone, they’re gone, so we’d suggest people get them while they can.”

Right now, customers can only buy the black Nexus 5, as the red and white models have been removed from the Google Play store. In fact, as of this writing, the Play Store lists that both the 16 GB and the 32 GB versions of the black Nexus 5 are out of inventory, and to check back soon. That may simply mean that once news hit that they were discontinued, Android fans raided the Play Store for whatever stock they had left. It could also mean that, right now, they’re out of stock, but they will be replenished with whatever’s still sitting in warehouses.

If the Play Store really is sold out, you may have some luck at your mobile carrier, while supplies last, of course. Considering its low price and great performance, the Nexus 5 was definitely a worthy purchase, and one of the best ways to enjoy the pure Android operating system. If you miss your chance now, you may be stuck with a lot of the higher priced alternatives out there. The Nexus 6, though sexy as hell, is both humongous and expensive.

Nexus 5, you will be missed.
