Talking tech since 2003

It’s here, and it’s cheap: Verizon has officially announced the long-rumored LG Windows Phone called the Lancet. Despite the fact that the images of the phone on Verizon’s website seem limited to renders, we now know the device’s specs and pricing. While there’s nothing too particularly exciting under the hood, the phone is a relative bargain at a full price of $120.

Will the Lancet be capable of running Windows 10 Mobile? We’ll know later this year…

The device runs Windows Phone 8.1 (which, assuming it can handle it, will be upgraded to Windows 10 Mobile when it launches later this year), and has a 4.5-inch display. It has 8GB of internal storage (expandable up to 128GB via microSD), a quad-core Snapdragon 4100 processor, and an 8MP rear camera. It’s capable of 4G LTE connectivity, but it’s not clear how much RAM it’s got under the hood. About a gig is usually a safe bet, though, especially for a phone as modestly priced as this.

It seems as though the Lancet is available for purchase right now, though it looks like it may be restricted to online sales right now. That makes sense considering the relative dearth of Windows Phone market share these days—why take up valuable shelf space with an underpowered Windows handset in a store?

Still, at such a low price, it seems like a great way to see if the Windows Phone platform is up your alley. Personally speaking, I’m waiting for Windows 10 Mobile to roll around, not to mention the cool, high-end Lumia phones Microsoft reportedly has in the works. I’m not definitely going to switch, but I am considering it. As such, with a big OS shakeup coming just around the corner, one has to wonder why LG bothered releasing this handset now. Is it a precursor to more Windows Phone devices? Is it part of a contractual obligation with Microsoft? Were they bored?
