Talking tech since 2003

It may be hard to imagine, but apparently LG has plans to outdo its top-tier G line of smartphones later this year, says a new report out of Korea (via CNET). The Korea Herald offers a statement from LG’s mobile boss, Cho Jun-ho, in which he made a bold promise at Mobile World Congress this week about the future of the company’s mobile offerings:

“We are planning to release a product that stands above the G series. It will be launched during the second half of this year.”

lg-urbaneIn case you were wondering, the G series of smartphones currently boast top-of-the line specs and components, with hardly a feature left out of the G3, and its successor in the G4 due out in April. How can LG top something that’s already at the top?

While the G3’s 5.5-inch screen already puts it squarely in the phablet category, it’s possible that LG will go bigger, perhaps. Or maybe they’ll go the luxury route, and design handsets with a focus on premium materials and features. We’ve already seen LG starting to shift toward style-oriented offerings in the form of the LG Urbane and Urbane LTE, the latter of which is the first LG smartwatch not to run Android Wear. The Urbane LTE’s operating system is, allegedly, based on webOS. Could LG have plans to dust webOS off for whatever mystery device it’s cooking up for the second half of 2015?

LG has been one of the most interesting, if not headline-making, device makers in the last year or so. Its smartphones have been getting nicer and more enticing, and if it continues to crank out quality handsets, it could displace some of the competition in terms of popularity. Hopefully some well-placed informants will ferret out LG’s plans before too long. Stay tuned.
