Talking tech since 2003

If someone linked to a funny picture on Facebook or Twitter, chances are pretty good it’s hosted on Imgur. Founded in 2009, Imgur has become the go-to place for dumb, meme-worthy images on the Internet. Today the company has announced a few new features that make the site a whole lot smarter, even if the images are just as dumb as they ever were.

imgur updateImgur’s got a new tagging and voting system that will give users more control over what content they find. It’s pretty simple: photos are tagged by users, and other users who see them vote them up or down. From there, clicking a tag will let you see the most popular images based on votes. It’s not reinventing the wheel, but it will make navigating Imgur and finding stuff you enjoy that much easier.

Said Imgur founder and CEO Alan Schaaf:

“We’ve grown so quickly, and it’s critical that we continue to deliver an experience to our users that makes the time they spend on our site as personal to them, and as enjoyable as possible. With 130 million users and 1.5 million images uploaded every day, there’s an incredible depth of amazing content to dive into. This new set of features significantly empowers our community to explore and enjoy the full scope of the web’s most viral content.”

This isn’t the first big move from Imgur to make image sharing easier. Back in January, the site launched its meme-making app for iOS. With the new tagging and voting feature, you’ll be able to find the image you made and uploaded in no time at all.

At the end of the day, any innovations that make Imgur more user friendly are going to make the web friendlier as a result. Since so many sites and social networks rely on Imgur to get their points across, don’t be surprised to see that number jump even higher as more people get on board with the new tagging features.

Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’m off to go find some new memes to spam my friends with.
