Talking tech since 2003

Since its launch, the Google Glass experiment has been fairly exclusive. The initial units went out to a select few. The next batch went out to those who could both secure an invite from a current Glass owner, and could also pony up $1,500 for the headsets.

googleglassToday, for one day only, Google is opening the doors to anyone interested in Glass. No tweets to Google as part of a contest. No begging Glass-using friends for an invitation. All you need to do is sign up as a Glass Explorer and plunk down $1,500.

Google announced the move last Thursday in a Google+ post (after accidentally posting it a bit too soon), stating that the company was “trying something new” in order to get more interested people into the Glass Explorer program.

One interesting bit in the post comes in the second paragraph, when Google says, “we’re opening up some spots in the Glass Explorer Program.” Does “some spots” mean that Google is only going to take a certain number of new Glass Explorers before it closes the door on registrations? That’ll be something to keep an eye on as we move through the day.

Another important note about the open registration today: those signing up can now get Glass in their choice of color and with or without a frame, all for the same $1500 price. If you browse the selection of Google Glass frames, you can see that frames as high as $225 have been knocked down to $0. So if you’re someone who wears prescription lenses, you can now order Glass and use without paying a pretty penny on top of the headset itself.

We’re not sure exactly when Google will cut open registration off, so my advice to you if you’re interested in Glass is register and buy your headset as quickly as possible. And if you happen to jump into the Glass Explorer Program, leave us a comment below and let us know.
