Talking tech since 2003

As part of its annual April 1st overhual, Gmail has been updated with some hot new features everyone has been waiting for. Above all, though, Google’s free-to-use email service now allows you to share those oh-so-loved selfies of yours with the masses, in the form of shelfies.

That’s right, all of those lovely self portraits you’ve been making of yourself and setting as the background to your Gmail account can finally be shared with others. You get it, right? Shareable selfies?

Shelfies!

“Gmail Shelfie is built on the idea that you shouldn’t be selfish with your selfie,” Google boldly claimed on its Gmail blog this afternoon.

“With just a few clicks, your mom, your aunt, or that girl you have a crush on can set your Shelfie as their Gmail theme so they can enjoy checking, reading, and writing emails while seeing your friendly face in the background.”

But what if you’re not a shelfie connoisseur yet? What if you’re not ”with the times” or “cool” as the kids say? Well, Google has thought of you too – if you possess no great shelfies, then you can simply pick one of Google’s top trending shelfies and set it as your Gmail background. We also have some recommendations.

Additionally, statistics from Google’s Department of Statistics clearly show that when Gmail custom themes launched, the number of self-portraits skyrocketed globally. And, of course, the number of pirates, naturally, declined. So Gmail Shelfie is not just another great end-user feature, but it’s also solving the wide-scale issue of web-theft.

So quick, go and take a shelfie.

This is, of course, an early April Fools Day announcement on Google’s part, but why stomp on their fun? After all, it might not be a joke at all..

I mean, it probably is. But what if it’s not?

It isn’t.

But what if?
