Talking tech since 2003

Computers have been in existence for a relatively longer time than smartphones. For this reason, for many years, there were functions that only a computer could perform. For instance, the only way you could type a document other than text was using a computer. The emergence of smartphones, however, changed the game significantly. Currently, smartphones have become more popular than their counterparts. In this write-up, we will be discussing how this is so.

5 reasons why smartphones are more popular than computers

1. Cost

One of the biggest differences between a smartphone and a desktop is the fact that smartphones are more cost-efficient. On average, smartphones are cheaper compared to desktops that can be way more expensive depending on the brand and the type. This means that it is easier to get a smartphone than a desktop by far.

The cost of operating a desktop is also relatively higher than that of operating a smartphone. For instance, the power consumption of a desktop is higher than the latter hence energy costs are quite high. On the other hand, the cost of repair, in case of damages in a desktop, is higher than the latter. Desktops are also at a higher risk of damages than the latter because there are too many parts involved (keyboard, mouse, monitor, CPU, Ethernet cable, power cable). The damage of one of the parts mentioned above could lead to the entire system not functioning. With a smartphone, you basically only need a charger.

2. Portability

A smartphone is a type of mobile phone. The term mobile means that it can be carried around anywhere. This is not the case with the desktop. As the name suggests, desktops are meant to be used on top of a desk. Once they are mounted and set up on a desk, you cannot use it anywhere else. Moving it around would mean that you have to set them up each time. Also, the size of a desktop is too large to be carried around comfortably. On the other hand, a smartphone features a compact design that is lightweight and applicable in any location. Unlike a desktop, you also do not need a power outlet to use a smartphone because it has a rechargeable battery.

3. Apps

It is impossible to meet a person with a smartphone and no apps. Apps are the cornerstone of the functioning of the features of a smartphone. From sending messages to taking photos and making calls, all these features use apps. Nowadays, almost every big company offers an app to their users, no matter if it’s a food service, streaming platform or a sports bookmaker that offers a specific betting app that enables users to place their bets on football or tennis matches straight from the smartphone.

This does not mean that you cannot use them on desktop computers; it only means that most people prefer to use them on mobile phones. The reason why this is the case is that with a mobile app, you can partake in activities like betting at any time of the day and from anywhere. It is up to you whether you prefer mobile apps or desktop, in which case they are referred to as setups.

4. Power Consumption

As mentioned earlier, desktops need a power outlet to operate. Other types of computers, like laptops, have batteries. However, the strength and power conservation properties of their batteries often cannot be compared to that of a smartphone. A high-performance CPU uses a lot of electricity ranging from 450 to 900 watts or more. This is because there are several moving parts like the fact that they generate a lot of heat hence laptops need to have fun running at all times. This is the reason why desktops use standard wall plugs and not batteries.

On the other hand, smartphones run on batteries. They also use up a very small amount of electricity since you only have to charge them once or twice in a day, depending on the intensity at which you use them and the quality of the battery.

5. Versatility

Desktop computers have very specific functions. You can use them for tasks like typing, accessing the internet and storage, to name a few. While smartphones may not have as much storage space as a computer, they can also be used to access the internet, make calls, type, send messages, take photos, and a myriad of other functions that a computer cannot provide. This means that a smartphone can function as a desktop while a desktop cannot achieve a large chunk of the functions of a smartphone like taking photos.

Conclusion

In attempts to solve some of the issues named above in computers, laptops were invented. They are relatively more compactly designed and as a result, more portable than their counterparts. They are also more cost-efficient, depending on the brand and type that you get. However, considering that mobile phones continuously keep getting more powerful and advanced let alone their versatility to take them anywhere you go, it is not surprising that they are more popular than desktop computers by now.
