Amazon Invites Press to April 2 Event for 'Video Business': Streaming Box On the Way?
That long-awaited Amazon streaming box may finally be making its way to your TV.
The folks at Re/Code got their hands on an invite to an April 2 event, sent by Amazon VP Peter Larson. We’ve embedded the image to the right.
As you can see, Amazon plans on talking about its “video business” at the event. This could go a few different directions.
The first and most obvious reason for the event is the Amazon streaming box. There were rumors that the company might release such a box as far back as a year ago, and more recent reports have added more specific details. If Amazon is finally ready to trot its set-top box out for the world to see, it could go on sale immediately or in a few weeks.
Amazon may also want to talk about its original pilots. The company released a new wave of TV pilots back in February, and while the picked-up shows have already been announced, the company may want to give us a look at how things are progressing.
There’s another possibility: that the company has struck a new content deal with someone. These deals rarely stay quiet for any significant amount of time, but if Amazon roped in a major partner, it could be worth a press event.
I’m obviously hedging my bets a bit here. The company itself hasn’t been specific about the event’s content, and it seems foolish to follow every other publication in claiming that we’re going to get a streaming box. I don’t think anyone knows that for a fact, save for those who actually work for Amazon.
If we hear anything more solid before the day of the event, we’ll definitely update you with that news.
In the meantime, what do you think we’ll see at Amazon’s event? Will it be a streaming TV box or does Amazon have something else in mind? Leave your thoughts below.
