Microsoft Officially Announces Sept. 30 Windows Event
We’ve been hearing about this since last month: Microsoft would be unveiling a preview version of Windows Threshold (aka Windows 9) at an event on September 30. Amid many leaks discussing, and then showing, how Windows 9 will work, Microsoft today started sending out invitations to an event in San Francisco, at which we’ll “hear about what’s next for Windows and the enterprise.”
A post on Neowin about the upcoming event speculates about the reasoning behind the mention of “the enterprise.” No, it’s got nothing to do with Star Trek, sadly. The reality is that most of Microsoft’s business customers haven’t bothered making the switch to Windows 8. Part of the reason for that, of course, is that Windows 8 was built to appeal to touch-based user interface, and that’s something that many business users haven’t needed. If Microsoft makes a special appeal to enterprise customers with Windows 9, they’ll be in good shape to recapture that market with Windows 9.
If we see all the same kinds of things at the upcoming event that we’ve been seeing in recent leaks, Windows 9 should be pretty cool. It’ll bring back the Mini Start Menu, blend the Modern Start Menu with desktop mode, move the Charms Menu to within app windows themselves, and even bring the Cortana digital assistant into the mix. Personally, I’m excited, and if it works as well as it looks, I might try to bring all my Windows computers into the Windows 9 ecosystem as soon as I can.
