Talking tech since 2003

Though it may seem that Sony is enjoying a healthy lead in this latest round of the video game console wars, it’s important for the company to never rest on its laurels. Case in point: a new post on TechRadar earlier today says that Sony will finally lift the veil on its long in-development virtual reality headset at the upcoming Game Developers Conference that starts on March 17.

According to the post, the news comes courtesy of a “confidential tipster,” who was extremely positive about the overall quality of Sony’s headset:

“The quality and resolution are really, really good. People will definitely be impressed with what Sony’s built.”

Moreover, the post says that Sony is expected to demonstrate some VR-based games at E3 this summer, which would mean that unveiling the headset beforehand would be a great way to get focus on the software rather than the hardware. And revealing a major hardware upgrade at this time of year wouldn’t be unprecedented—in fact, it was almost a year to the day today that Sony first announced the PlayStation 4 at an event in New York. Later that summer at E3, Sony could talk games and exclusives. It wouldn’t be surprising if Sony employed a similar strategy if it did indeed unveil a VR headset at GDC next month.

We heard rumblings about a virtual reality headset coming out of Sony from way back in 2011, with more news regarding its use in Sony’s gaming hardware hitting last September. During that time, the cult of Oculus Rift has grown, meaning that Sony has some major competition on its hands.

Where Oculus has wowed anyone who’s tried it, Sony has something of an uphill battle in terms of winning over skeptical Oculus fans. On the flip-side, Oculus seems to be PC-exclusive, leaving console gamers out of the virtual reality fun. If Sony does actually release this headset for its PS4, it’ll have another major weapon against Microsoft and the Xbox One—even without Titanfall.

Would you want a VR headset for your PS4? And if so, how much would you pay for it?

I just hope they find a way to incorporate the SmartWig.
