Keeping your data safe and secure with a backup solution is important, but what if you delete something before it was backed up?  Or what if you were naughty and didn’t ever backup and accidentally deleted a file?  What do you do then?  The answer isn’t to run around screaming in panic.  The answer is to make sure you have a data recovery application that you can count on.  I was recently turned onto a Mac data recovery app by EaseUS and in my tests its performed quite well.

As with most data recovery tools, EaseUS Data Recovery Wizard, is most effective when run as soon as possible after deleting something you want to have recovered.  The reason for this is because the longer you wait to try and recover a file of any type, the more likely the part of your hard drive that stored that information will be overwritten with new data therefore making it even harder to recover the complete file.

EaseUS’ app was able to recover various different types of files (from images to zip files) without any corruption upon recovery.  In my tests I found that the regular scan (which took approximately 30 seconds or so to complete on my computer) was able to find recently deleted files and easily recover them.  The app was even able to successfully recover files that were deleted using OS X’s “Secure Empty Trash” feature.

While the regular scan worked well for me, there may be an occasion where you need to try the “Deep Scan,” this is usually reserved for last ditch efforts.  The deeper scan takes significantly longer, clocking in around 35-40 minutes to complete on my computer, but can be useful if you’ve recently reformatted a drive.  Again, every scenario is different and there’s never any guarantee that EaseUS’ Mac data recovery software (or any data recovery software for that matter) will be able to get back your precious files.

In addition to the app being able to scan your main drive, it can also scan other storage mediums like flash drives, SD cards, cameras, and more.  The app offers the ability to easily select which types of files to look for as well.  For example, if you know you are looking for an image file you can easily select to only have it look for image/graphic files prior to starting the scan — this can reduce the amount of time a scan takes, too.

Once the scan completes, you will be presented with a tree view of folders that you can dig into and look for the specific file(s) you want to recover. After you (hopefully) find the file(s) you want to recover, it’s as easy as selecting them and then clicking the “Recover” button.

Once you click the recover button you will need to select a location to have the file(s) recovered to, in most cases (unless your hard drive is failing) you can recover the file(s) to your hard drive and click continue if you get a warning. If the drive you are recovering the files from is failing, you will want to make sure you recover the files to a separate storage device.

As you can see from the screenshots, the app is very simple and clutter-free, making it easy to use and navigate.  It also offers a few different views that you can utilize to view files you may want to recover — everything from the traditional list view to cover flow.

The EaseUS data recover app for Mac retails for $89.95, which is a bit pricey but could be the difference between losing an important file forever and recovering it.  The company also offers a Windows version of the product as well.
