Windows 10 Technical Preview is Here

Leaving aside for a moment the absurdity of Microsoft’s decision to skip Windows 9 in favor of naming its new operating system Windows 10, the technical preview for the updated OS is now available to download.

As Joe Belifore, Vice President of Windows tells us in a handy video on the preview page, the Windows 10 Technical Preview is meant for those of us who could be classified as PC or IT experts, since the operating system is “rough around the edges.” That’s a nice way of saying that this is going to have some bugs, and you will have a hard time at least once or twice. Moreover, a consumer-focused version of the technical preview is slated to come out in early 2015, says a post on TechCrunch. So if you’re afraid to take the plunge just now, you may want to wait until then.

That said, if you do download the technical preview today, Microsoft assures that you’ll have easy access to provide customer feedback, not to mention constant updates. That means that something that might not work too well right now might get fixed in short order, and that it’ll hit your machine before too long. If you decide to take the plunge, your technical preview will be good until April 15, 2015.

I’ve had less than great experience with Windows updates in the past – my switch from Windows 8 to Windows 8.1 was notably terrible. However, I did that with a Dell Latitude 10, a machine that was already kind of ill-prepared to truly be running the full version of Windows, even it was only 32-bit. Now I primarily use a Surface Pro 3 – which was made by Microsoft, of course – and an Acer laptop that runs Windows 7. I think for now I might take the plunge on the Surface. After all, if ever a computer were made to take full advantage of whatever Microsoft’s got up its sleeve, it’s the Surface Pro 3.

I’ll be downloading tonight and testing things out this week, and I’ll write up a post on my experience on Friday or so…assuming my computer hasn’t melted by then. In the meantime, has anyone downloaded the technical preview? If so, what do you think so far?
