Waiting on Android 5.0? Google Just Released Android 5.0.1

The rollout of Android 5.0 – aka Lollipop, aka Android L – has been slow, with the result being that most eligible Android users still haven’t received the new version of the mobile OS. However, even as most people still wait for Android 5.0 to show up on their devices, Google has gone ahead and released an even newer version of the operating system: Android 5.0.1.

What’s on the docket for 5.0.1? According to a post on CNET, the new version squashes a bug that could inadvertently trigger device resets under a very specific set of conditions. Essentially, the bug could trigger a reset if a user’s device is accidentally turned on while in a pocket or purse, with errant taps counting as failed unlock attempts. The new update will keep this from happening, it seems.

When will users receive this update? Well, if you haven’t even received Android 5.0 yet, don’t count on seeing 5.0.1 anytime soon. Nexus devices are still receiving updates throughout December, while phones made by companies that aren’t LG or Motorola may not see Android L until early 2015. It’s frustrating, since iOS users all receive their updates at the same time. The fractured nature of the Android ecosystem, however, means that users are stuck waiting or installing updates manually (like I wound up doing).

On that note, once Android 5.0 did wind up on my device, I’ve been pleased as punch. The battery saver mode works great, and the entire UI is pleasing to use and look at. I especially like the new, more versatile control panel that drops down from the top of the screen.

What are your thoughts on Android 5.0 thus far? Let us know in the comments.
