This Sexist Site Promises to Teach You to Code

This has to be a joke. A site called CodeBabes recently launched to teach people how to code. So how does it plan to do that? CodeBabes offers twenty-two lessons, and, to keep you interested in progressing, for each quiz you pass, your CodeBabe instructor will seductively take off an article of clothing. I’m all for learning to code, but this is just dumb and downright sexist (something that’s become a real problem in the tech industry).

“We go fast, each lesson is a quicky, we’re pretty sure you won’t mind re-watching them :), pause it when it gets to fast, or…. ya know, FAP,” the website says on its “Philosophy” page. “You WILL learn something. Sure, we’re entertaining, but the courses are damn good at teaching fundamentals and best practices of web development and coding. Double threat.”

Seriously? That’s not even funny.

Even if the people who created this meant it as a joke, it’s completely misguided. Sexism in the tech industry is a real problem, we should be actively looking to solve it, and that doesn’t mean wasting resource on making a site to make “fun” of the problem. If you want to learn to code stick with Codecademy or Treehouse.
