Galaxy Note III & Galaxy Gear unveiling on September 4 confirmed

We’ve grown quite accustomed to the way companies unveil their new products, which primarily happens in one of two ways: weeks or months in advance with photos and specs to match, or as a surprise at a special event. Samsung senior VP Lee Young-hee isn’t one for convention, it seems, as she’s tipped The Korea Times off to the date that both the Galaxy Note III and Galaxy Gear smartwatch will be released — September 4.

This news was relayed to the U.S. courtesy of Android Beat.

Samsung’s Lee Young-hee

Neither the Galaxy Note III nor the Galaxy Gear smartwatch are surprises. We’ve actually been hearing about them for a while, though we haven’t had solid specs to nail down. Young-hee comes to the rescue once again, at least where the Galaxy Gear is concerned, by letting us in on a little secret: the Galaxy Gear will run on Android, and it will not utilize a flexible display.

If you were looking for a Tizen-powered watch with a futuristic bendable display, you’ll have to keep waiting.

September 4 is a little more than a week away and it appears, barring any surprise announcements, that Samsung will beat both Apple and Google into the much-hyped smartwatch market, though Apple typically doesn’t let on about its secret projects and Google is already working on Glass.

We don’t know how well, if at all, the Galaxy Gear smartwatch will work with non-Samsung Android devices but it’s extremely unlikely Samsung will build it to work with Apple’s iPhone, so perhaps both Apple and Google still have time to get into the game before its customers feel the pull from the galaxy of Galaxy.

We’ll be covering any news on both the Galaxy Note III and the Galaxy Gear smartwatch that drops between now and that September 4 event. Until then, we’d love to get your thoughts on the smartwatch world. Do you plan on picking up a Galaxy Gear or will you wait for Apple’s or Google’s take on the device?
