W-O-W. I did not know anything about that. I'll probably spend a lot of time on that site perusing the carvings. I did not know that Jade carving was used by anyone but the Chinese -- These are gorgeous:

hi JD

greenstone [jade]

is found in riverbeds

in its raw state

but is protected from exploitation

by the masses

and is handed to the local tribes

to manage

and i must say it is managed well

so that the supply is there forever

we have professional carvers

wich carvethe tokens

nad most are sent to the museums

very little are sold

for money

it is againsrt our custom

to exploit

the culture

nearly all males are presented with a taonga

tribal cuystom

-----------------------------------------------------

those two images you posted

are called a tiki and a patu

and the tiki

was an ornament worn around the neck

those two you posted probably

have a history attached to them

which can be recited by the people

who own them

i have a jade

i wear round my neck called a taonga

and i will post an example

later

marty

here is another site with jade carvings

when in there press gallery

many cultures around the world used to hand carve with

primative tools like my ancesters

but today

it is modernised with electtric drills ect

so any culture who carved by hand

must have had a lot of patience
