hi any one use open office

read this

it may be handy

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The pest is written in Star Basic. It downloads an image file with adult content from the Internet and opens that file in a new document, according to Kaspersky's posting.

So far, Stardust is a proof-of-concept virus, which means that it was created to demonstrate that an OpenOffice virus is possible. The virus has not been sent out in the wild and is not actually attacking people's systems.

The story is different for Microsoft Office applications: A yet-to-be-patched security hole in Word has been exploited in at least one recent cyberattack.

A new "macro virus" is like a blast from the past. Viruses have evolved significantly. Boot sector pests were around between 1986 to 1995, followed by macro viruses that exploited early Microsoft Windows operating systems, according to security company F-Secure. The advent of e-mail subsequently propelled e-mail viruses such as the "I Love You" and the Anna Kournikova virus.

the only problem with the story is, there is no virus..

a scripts the user has to click yes on opens a picture from the internet( why you need a macro)

this does not run an exeacutable, it does not compermise anything, does not reproduce, does not do anything but show a picture...

and last time I checked, downloading porn is what the internet is for...

I read it is a bug in Star Office, but not necessarily being exploited. Just someone tried to see if they could exploit the flaw. Hopefully it will be patched before it is misused by anyone!

By the way, I disagree with the cavalier way people talk about the Internet as if the porn available on the Internet is all that the Internet is good for is porn. So sad that porn always seems to sully and off-color so many places even family boards such as this one in the comedy section etc, or even innocent warning threads such as this one!!!

Remarks such as "and last time I checked, downloading porn is what the internet is for..." shows how limited some people's internet usage probably is; and how little respect is given to those of us who abhor such garbage, or how sorry we feel for those addicted to a lifestyle of porn whether online or off.

I doubt it will be patched, it is (IMO) more a feature than a bug. Macro's can be very useful in an office application. It can be exploited but on a unix/linux system it should be limited by the users privledges.

I guess you dont remeber the early days of the internet. And to say Iccaros' comment "sully and off-color" the thread is a bit much toward an obvious joke.

Indeed. There's also piracy and flame wars.

I have great respect for your values, Pat! :D And yes, this is a family board. We do not condone porn of any kind and will not permit pictures of porn or links to porn. As a moderator I will remove images, links to anything that is contrary to the philosophy of Besttechie.net.

iccaros does not advocate, promote the use of porn nor does he post any offensive images. I know iccaros, he is a good family man with a wicked sense of humour. Pat, he made a light-hearted joke, and that is the way I received his post, I thought it was funny.

I do not think iccaros intended to offend you, Pat. Take care. It is great to see you here in the Linux forum. :D

This is not a bug or a hole. A hole would have to exsist in the OS to allow an exploit from *office. The problem with MS Office is that the hole is in the OS (windows) as the same hole is not exploited from using office through WINE, because WINE does not have the same hole Windows does.

in this case, a seperate hole would have to exploited for each OS and possabaly each release of Linux if it targeted it, also to the point, you can disable macros (it ask by default if you want to run them, if you did not make the doocument DON'T run the micro.. click NO)

While I respect that not all people view adult material on line, it was the driving force that got the internet rolling. I used to run a BBS and adult content was what most people asked for (I did not provide adult content as my BBS was for tradewars and a few doors to e-mail)

Its not my intent to insult someones personal ideals, but is also not my intent to censor my humor.

I am rather suprised when people don't see the humor or are afrade to mention topics as if you ignoring them they will go away.

If you stay on this board long enough you will notice that we try not to offend and you don't get any RT*M comments or such.. we respect each other, even diffrent people like me and carnevil.

Hi folks;

I post the Virus/Trojan/Worm etc. Threats at GSF.

It's a 'proof of concept' Virus. It is not an actual executing virus.

SBasic.Stardust.A!int

Also Known As: XML_DUSTAR.A [Trend Micro]

SBasic.Stardust.A!int is a proof-of-concept macro virus for Sun StarOffice documents that attempts to download a JPG image.

I would like to apologize for overreacting to your remark. First of all I didn't notice in Marty's post that the virus downloaded an "adult content image file", so the remark seemed to just be a statement 'out of the blue'. As to the humor of it, well I missed that too. I need to explain that I am a survivor of childhood and early adult (first marriage) abuse in many forms....physical, emotional, verbal, and physical sexual abuse (including verbal and pictorial and written materials ranging from dirty jokes on up to and including very depraved porn which I wont go into of what it consisted of). That I survived and am relatively normal took many of my 61 years to deal with alot of it. Some of the worst things are in hidden memories that are triggered by something (even stuff that appears to have nothing to do with what happened) at various times to cause flash-backs, and nightmares. Similar to what anyone who has had any kind of post traumatic stress event(s) deals with over lifetime. By the way there are many many of us women, and men too, who have survived past abuse, some much worse than I have been through and we all have different coping ways to deal with it.

So for the most part I have learned to not overreact to most stuff, but sometimes it happens anyhow and for that I am sorry! Usually when I realize I have overreacted to something, I will try to edit it out before what I said causes anyone to much trouble, but yesterday I was unable to process that it was an overreaction in time (took all day and most of night) as I have also been processing other triggers and flash backs for the last week or so (due to the 3 day memorial day holiday reminding me of an extremely bad weekend, many years ago) and was on overload I guess. So now this post is my other way to correct my overreaction by trying to explain why and how things affect me, and to apologize for my overreacting both here and in my continued unhappiness with the comedy club section. I sure wish there was a way to tell which jokes over there will be good clean ones, versus the others that I want to avoid, since I really do have a sense of humor...although it gets misplaced at times....and I do like clean jokes to cheer up my day as much as anyone else.

As for the history of the internet, well I have only had a computer about 5 years and haven't really paid much attention to computer/internet history although have read some about it.

I didn't even realize I was in the Linux section when I read/posted on this thread, sorry for the intrusion! I use the link next to My controls to "view new posts", and don't pay much attention to which area a thread has been posted on. I just was relaying what I had read/heard on local news (edit: perhaps it was on local news due to their aiming it, if it is Linux related, towards the large community of Linux people in Portland area including some famous guy name starts with a T but can't remember what just now that invented for lack of the proper word Linux or?) plus seeing an item over at I think it was PC World's website the other day about this virus.

I also was unaware that the alternative office type programs were for linux os, somehow I thought they were for anyone on Windows who didn't want to pay Microsoft a small fortune for "Office". Sorry for my ignorance on this and in many other areas of computing.

I spent quite a bit of time doing a similar post for this thread earlier this morning, and just as I was nearly done with it I lost the entire page...it just totally disappeared don't have a clue why either. So this is a shortened version, as even telling my background has been so upsetting all morning that I have been crying and shaking, but still I had to come back to say I am sorry for overreacting to your remark but to let you folks know why things bother me so much. And no I am not trying to ignore the things or pretend they don't exist. Yes I am afraid of some things in this world, been through to much hell to not have learned to be afraid of the bad stuff that happens in this world. Can't explain it anymore than that. Oh in case anyone is wondering...none of how I feel about this subject has anything to do with my being a Christian, although that has helped me heal alot from the bad memories.

So before I lose this reply, I will post it now, and edit later if needed.

God bless everyone

The Linux section discusses porn! Screw Windows, I'm downloading a Knoppix ISO as I type! :D:P
