Reformat Reinstall Win 98 Se

Recommended Posts

hello, i have a laptop that the cd rom seems to not be working. is there anyway to reformat & reinstall without a cd rom? do have a working floppy and usb port. thanks uncleduby

You need a CD Rom drive to install it, only other bet would be to remove the hard drive, install windows, then transfer it back into the laptop

Your best bet is to buy an adapter so you can hook up the laptop hard drive to the Desktop computer. You could then format and install Win98SE. Only load the Windows generic drivers. Place the hard drive back in then install the modem/Ethernet drivers so you can connect to the Internet and install the laptop's motherboard, video and other necessary drivers. Of course by the time you did this you could probably find a CD drive for the laptop. What make and model is it?

Do you get any error messages? Have you looked in Device Manager to see if their are problems with the CD drive?

the device manager says its working. when i put in a cd it says d:\ is not accessible. i tried a music cd it said file not found check to see if file or path is correct

that may just be a windows problem(corrupt install). You should try and boot a bootable cd. If it will boot from a cd, then you should be able to install with it.

i tried rebooting with win 98 se disk in drive, it first initilizes boot from cd-rom then ends up booting to windows

Have you tried using a CD/DVD lens cleaner on your CD drive 1st?.

It may not be working because the lens might be full of dirt. You can get lens cleaners for cheap at any local electronics store. Just pop one of those in and 99% of the time the cd/dvd drive usually starts working again :)
