this litle reg tweek is not for every one obviously as you must be comfortable with your registry however there allways comes a time when you find your self with a .dll or .ocx file that for all intencive purposes will just not delete or install

this also aplies to .ocx controls

now sure you could open the run box and do this manually by typing

regsvr32 -u any.dll

or

regsvr32.exe /u any.dll to unregister

and

regsvr32 any.dll

or

regsvr32.exe any.dll

acordingly

or you can copy and paste the following into note pad

and save file as

DllOCXRegisterStop.reg

right click and merge

..................................................................

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\dllfile\Shell]

@="Register"

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\dllfile\Shell\Register]

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\dllfile\Shell\Register\command]

@="regsvr32.exe %1"

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\dllfile\Shell\Unregister]

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\dllfile\Shell\Unregister\command]

@="regsvr32.exe /u %1"

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.ocx]

@="ocxfile"

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\ocxfile]

@="OCX File"

"EditFlags"=hex:00,00,01,00

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\ocxfile\Shell]

@="Register"

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\ocxfile\Shell\Register]

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\ocxfile\Shell\Register\command]

@="regsvr32.exe %1"

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\ocxfile\Shell\Unregister]

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\ocxfile\Shell\Unregister\command]

@="regsvr32.exe /u %1"

..................................................................

This will add the entries to your registry so that when you right click on a dll or ocx file the popup menu will include "Register" and "Unregister". This is handy for removing any unnecessary registry entries or re-registering files that weren't registered properly by their setup programs

G.

Wow...wow and more wows...what a list! I copied and printed your first post (my Son will absolutely LOVE this!)

And you're right about the lack of reading involved with these "new fangled operating systems". I learned computers while working, using DOS before mice were invented--you HAD to read what was on the monitor. And it took a Dummies Book and lots of "head scratching" to figure out what all those little pictures were on my first computer (Windows98). Oh, how my kids screwed things up by "pointing and clicking" without reading what they were doing.....and of course, they call me paraniod for reading every little thing.... :D

Thank you, Goliath

me to blim

i coppied and pasted some of them

some i already knew through learning

earlier

but that is a handy list

was a bit wary of the reg

but i do know some of the commands tho rarely use it

i know how to delete the search entrys

and the spare icons.and the mru's

that clutter up the taskbar

other than that

im a bit cautious.

they but i agree with goliath

sometimes we need to know the commands

in particular the dos commands are

very handy

which ime not very good at

tho i know how to delete the d.ll cache

and my ip address which i do often

now my Q

by deleting the the ip address every so often

does this make it a bit harder

for hackers to enter your sys through the

ip?
