first idea would be to download a livecd of a distro. This way you get a general feeling for linux without having to do a full install. That way if Linux isn't right for you, you haven't screwed up your Windows install.

Ubuntu is a good one pretty much works out of the box.

or any other distro you might be insterested in, you can find a list of them at FozenTech's LiveCd List

regardless of which one you choose, someone here can help you out.

no you need a program like Nero or Nero express, I usually open Nero Express then choose make an ISO. that takes care of putting it on the blank cd. Next reboot your computer with the disk in the drive making sure your system boots from the cd-rom not the hard drive. then enjoy

I presume you have a dsl connection, if you do then you will have internet access with it.

its sounds like your X server did not start..

information we need..

1) what computer are you running this on ? (type, memory, video ..age)

2) do you have a diffrent computer you can try

3) try reburning the ISO image.

the causes can be

1) an unsupported video card

2) your cdrom could be older and have problems with reading the early sectors of the CD.. this would not show up untill you try to boot from a CD..

3) you have a bad burn.. don't worry that happens to everyone....

I'm running Windows XP Home SP2, Dell 2350, 512 RAM, ATI Radeon 9250 256mb

No other computer.

And I used a DVD-R ( is that okay? )

The DVD Drive I has is fairly new too.

did you get the dvd iso or the liveCD iso?

if you got the cd version that is your problem. the cd version is not designed to run from a DVD disk. believe it or not there is a difference.
