Microsoft announced that it would release a security update to help protect customers from exploitations of a vulnerability in the Windows Meta File (WMF) area of code in the Windows operating system on Tuesday, January 2, 2006, in response to malicious and criminal attacks on computer users that were discovered last week.

Microsoft will release the update today on Thursday, January 5, 2006, earlier than planned.

The security update will be available at 2:00 pm PT as MS06-001

For the info and download links if you do not get it from automatic update.

Note that since win98 and ME are no longer supported OS, microsoft choose not to patch them at this time since no current exploits targeting them exist.

For users of those systems unregistering the DLL is still the best approach.

Go to start / run and type

regsvr32 /u shimgvw.dll

hit enter

For XP users who already did this , once patched you can go there and type

regsvr32 /i shimgvw.dll

To reactivate it.

Dinosaurs wanna know: What effect will unregistering that DLL have? What services or features will be disabled?
