Mount St Helens

Recommended Posts

Well the past week of earthquake activity, over 10,000 quakes, was a good warning Mount St Helens would erupt soon. And it did, for about 20 minutes at 12:03pm PDT today. Steam and ash blew up from under the glacier in the crater next to the dome. I heard a couple of minutes ago that it went up to over 10, 000 feet. And the wind will take it west or southwest.

It continued to blow for about 20 minutes then stopped.

Went through the ash problems in 1980, don't want to do it again. So I hope it doesn't come to Portland area.

I will come back to this with some links in a few minutes.

It is being covered on local news and national news channels.

Only one of my links is available due to excessive use probably.

Out local channel 2 tv news website is available, so here is the link.

Portland Ch 2 News

Now the Cascades Volcano Observatory link is working, but not updated. It has several good links. Unfortunately the mountain webcam is not working, may be ash covered? or site is down?

P.S. The webcam is back up. It updates every 5 minutes.

As I posted in the other St. Helens thread...

Mount St. Helens erupted at 12:03pm PDT. The activity continued for about

24 minutes, creating a steam and dust plume that reached about 10,000 feet

elevation and drifted SSW toward Portland, OR and the Pacific coast.

Steam vented from a location at the southern edge of the dome where the

dome edge is covered by glacial ice and debris from the southern crater

wall. On Thursday afternoon N-S linear cracks were observed in the glacier

ice there, implying a slight uplift beneath the ice. Video images of the

eruption showed steam, some possibly superheated, venting from a limited

area and carrying blocks and fines upward into a mostly-white steam plume.

A USGS helicopter flight at the time of the eruption detected no thermal

anomaly with a thermal IR device, implying that this was a steam explosion

only, without magma being directly involved. Live video images taken by

helicopter at roughly 2:00pm PDT show a large hole in the glacial ice at

the edge of the dome, with a layer of gray ash and ejected blocks extending

from it over the ice only toward the SW.

The ongoing seismic activity decreased substantially during the eruption,

but then has rebounded at least slightly since the eruption ceased.

There have been no reported mudflows, but a possibility of slightly

increased flow of water out of the crater.

A USGS team was installing a seismometer on the NW flank of the volcano at

the time, but they were not affected by the event and were not in the path

of the plume.

Presumably an update will soon be posted at:

The mountain is ramping up to do something again. Some steam bursts today, and more earthquake or tremors caused by moving magma under the surface.

About 1pm PDT the visitors were evacuated from Johnson Ridge where the Cascades Volcano Observatory is located about 5 miles from the mountain.

So this latest activity is being taken quite serious, which is good in order to protect people.

Another local Portland tv channel news site link. This one had the best coverage yesterday due to their helicopter pilot/reporter was in the air over the mountain yesteday doing his segment when the mountain blew. So was the best and closest pictures of all the local channels, though he did back off from his previous 2 and a half mile position. I think CNN carried his pictures too.

Ch 6 Portland news

P.S. The experts are now saying a magma and ash eruption is probable in the next 24 hours. The local ch 8 weatherman says the prevailing winds will be coming down to the S and or SW for that time period. So if the ash plume has enough heighth, we in the greater Vancouver,Wa/Portland,Or metro area will likely get ashed. Ugh!!!! :(

God bless everyone.

I heard on the radio that Helen was "venting"(??venting) again today.

I guess "she" is still hot under the crust.

:P

Realy I hope everything up there quiets down for another 18 years.

Yeah "she" has intestinal gas and probably needs to belch alot more than just steam and ash before settling down for a few more decades.

Some reports have mentioned a sulfurous odor on her breath. Hasn't flossed or gargeled with mouthwash for a good many years, so the odor is not surprising.

All sorts of stuff could come up if the bellyache gets worse.

Is there a Dr for volcanos?

God bless everyone.

Is there a Dr for volcanos?

I know from history there is/was a R/X for them, but I'm sure the EPA will tell you that throwing virgins in a volcano is a violation of their regulations. stop.gif

And I will bet that virgins are on some protected/endangered species list,so you would get a lot of flack over that as well.ZZZsleep.gif

And never mind the trouble you would be in with ASPCV

If you officially sacrifice a virgin to the mountain then you need to fill out a lot of forms and notify the *VOA local union to make sure that no guidelines are broken.

Now I don’t know

I don’t know

I don’t know where I’m a gonna go

When the volcano blow

Chorus:

Let me say now I don’t know

I don’t know

I don’t know where I’m a gonna go

When the volcano blow

Ground she’s movin’ under me

Tidal waves out on the sea

Sulphur smoke up in the sky

Pretty soon we learn to fly

Chorus:

Let me hear ya now I don’t know

I don’t know

I don’t know where I’m a gonna go

When the volcano blow

Now my girl quickly say to me

Mon you better watch your feet

Lava come down soft and hot

You better lava me now or lava me not

Thanks for doing the picture.

Now please tell me how to take a picture off a website, such as Ch2's, and put it over here, or other boards? All I know how to do is copy and paste a regular link using the http thingy above the reply window. I tried the img one for the picture and it said I did something wrong. So would like to know the right way. Thanks.

God bless everyone.

This works in Firefox.

Right click the image / Copy Image Location

When you reply to the post, or start a new topic, click on the "IMG" button at the top, and paste it between the image tags (IMG)(/IMG).

I use ")(" instead of "][", so it will post correctly.

The only way I could to do it in IE, is to right click the image / Properties

Copy the http address of the image, and use that, between the image tags.
