And most important are they free of adware, malware or worse?

I have always been leery of downloading stuff due to my techknownothow, and to being scared of possible attached bad stuff.

Hey Pat, when I download anything I right click on it then I have the option to scan it with my antivirus program, which I do.

As far as infected downloads go, the people who post here are smart enough and experienced enough that they would not recommend sites that carry bad software. Those sites have a reputation to maintain and would root out any bad stuff before they offered it.

As for free vs. really free, there are a lot of different types of software that can justifiably use the label free, you just have to read the information given for that software to understand HOW free it is. Read the links given to wikpedia's definitions.
