Well, hosting from home would require a few things, like a dedicated internet connection, a server (basically, computer) to run it, and a domain. Many of these things are obtainable, but not practical for a home user.

The best thing I suggest to you is to either go out and learn HTML, CSS, and PHP/ASP. Once you have those under your belt, the creation of a website will be easy. As for setting it up, configuring server, those things are a bit tricky and documentation for each step would be need. Consult google for this, as well as the other topics.

Hmm... the links from the previous post are great, but I wouldnt suggest host a site on a computer you plan on using for anything other than hosting.

most of the time: free=bad(save open-source), Ive yet to find a really good free host... However, if you dont mind ads, Anglefire, Geocities, Envy.nu(lots-o-spyware), and Tripod are So-so...

I understand that you want control of your website, though I recommend free alternatives:

Angelfire I used them for several years, however they don't support php, asp, or perl. Though they do allow file transfer either through their built-in interface or an external ftp client. Beware, in recent years they have many ads and popups.

Blogger If you want to create a blog (easy to use interface, no ads, and ability to cutomize the html template is nice, I still use their services. Owned by Google, and has unlimited picture upload as well as unlimited blogs.)

Frihost I currently use them, they have php, asp, and perl support. They have an easy to use interface in conjunction with "Fantasco" which make it pretty easy to customize your site. 250mb of storage. However there is one catch. You must have 5 posts on their forum before "applying" for a website. As well as continue to post on their points system. Kinda odd at first, but its good.

Imageshack I thought I'd include this, because everyone always wants a host to allow them to upload pics, with no strings attached. What is cool about them is they allow "hot-linking".

I hope this helps, and this my first post here. I've been on and off the "Tech Support" board back @ TTV
