Need help with HP 4410T laptop.

Recommended Posts

Hey all LTNS.

I have HP 4410T mobile thin client laptop that I need help with. This machine was used as a business laptop but the comany which this person used to work for doesn't want to pay for postage to send it back to them, So, I was ask to see if I could turn it into a everyday laptop. But I'm having a problem trying to remove embeded links to busines servers and such, Every time it boots up its trying to go a server address of remote.dentaquest.com and that goes 404 no server found, it also has shortcuts to Citrix access gateway site which do work. Even removing the shortcuts from the desktop and in IE 7 won't stay deleted after a reboot of the machine.

The OS it has is Embeded XP, which to me its sorta a red flag, meaning its locked down pretty tight with limited XP capability right? cause when I go into control panel there are very few icons in there and even the start menu has very few things listed as well. I don't even know how big the HD is or if has a CD/DVD drive in it.

So, can you guys help me out with it?

I thought mabey someone would weigh in on this. I did do a lot of reading to see if i could find anything to help & i came up with nothing !  And it seems like it did come pre-installed !!

If you want to run an OTL Scan i will see if we can find stuff that needs to be removed that way !!

Download OldTimer to your desk top !
Links: http://oldtimer.geekstogo.com/OTL.com http://oldtimer.geekstogo.com/OTL.scr

If you already have a copy of OTL delete it and use this version.  (Note: If you are running on Vista, right-click on the file and choose Run As Administrator).

* Double click OTL.exe to launch the program.
* Check the following.

o Scan all users.
o Standard Output. o Lop check.
o Purity check. oExtra Registry > Use SafeList

* Under Extra Registry section, select Use SafeList
* Click the Run Scan button and wait for the scan to finish (usually about 10-15 mins).
* When finished it will produce two logs.

o OTL.txt (open on your desktop).
o Extras.txt (minimised in your taskbar) The Extras.txt file will only appear the very first time you run OTL.

* Please post me both logs. This may have to be broken into more than one post !

Hey,

It may be very difficult to do... thin clients that run Windows XP Embedded require the company's servers to get access to the operating system, etc. They're pretty limited as you have found out.

Companies use thin clients because they have the ability to run an operating system with major applications such as word processing and spreadsheets, as well as other custom internal software, on remote servers. This saves companies millions in computing service fees.

The storage in the thin client is most likely 1 or 2GB, so you can't install any OS on that.  It's also not a traditional hard drive, but rather flash memory. I'm not sure you will be able to add a real hard drive to it (my guess is not likely).

Unfortunately, you probably can't do much with it outside of the company.

So, you think it's a loss cause trying to turn this into a everyday use laptop? I can run HP programs on it about the system if you want me to post the specs of the system?

Chuck, do you want me to post OTL or not?

Hey Chuck, thx man for your help, I'm not really sure why the shortcuts won't stay deleted as well, I did try it under safemode, and going back up to regular mode brings it back up,, I did nose around abit and found it does have a ram drive, like you guys THINK it had I also think it has a CD/DVD, but I can't figure out how to pop it open with a key combo.

Chuck, after looking through these logs for me, and you still think its a lost cause then let me know, so I can tell the person who owns this about it. They're on vaction for a bit, and so they gave this to me play with til they get back.  I'm going to post the logs in the next couple of posts hopefully I did it right.

Hi John, i'm not seeing anything that i think would help that OS !! What i found is below & just mostly clean up !

We need to Run an OTL fix !!

    * Double-click OTL.exe to start the program.
    * Copy and Paste the following code into the customFix.png. Do not include the word Code

=====================

I don't know if removing dentaquest in the OTL fix will help or not.

Yes John you did it right !

I am still think that Jeff is right about not doing much with it here is the info on the hard drive, as you can see it's real small, if my memory is right it takes 2 GB to install windows 7 ............

Drive C: | 1.85 Gb Total Space | 1.33 Gb Free Space | 71.63% Space Free | Partition Type: NTFS
Drive Z: | 63.75 Mb Total Space | 51.72 Mb Free Space | 81.13% Space Free | Partition Type: FAT

Wish i had better news John but i would tell them to ditch it & get a new Computer !!

And to remove OTL :

Clean up with OTL

    Right-click OTL.exe and select " Run as administrator " to run it.
    This will remove all the tools we used to clean your pc.
    Close all other programs apart from OTL as this step will require a reboot
    On the OTL main screen, press the CleanUp! button
    Say Yes to the prompt and then allow the program to reboot your computer.

Chuck, and others.

After applying the OTL fix you posted it and after a reboot returns back to with those shortcuts on the desktop, and OTL disapears as well. I'm starting to get to that point where you told me this was a lost cause, I thought it be a easy fix, thinking just to either reformat the hard drive and start from scratch or try to clear cmos, but I guess not eh?

its ashamed it's a nice system, it has bunch of I/O connections on it and it seems fast to me.

Any other thoughts?

I have a couple of thoughts about this system that I want bounce these off you and or anyone else.

1) Would removing the battery help any with this problem?

2) How about removing the HD/ramdrive, or change the boot order help?

I'm pretty sure neither would do anything to help the situation.  I'm not even sure you could remove whatever storage is in the thin client  (if its just flash memory it could be soldered to the motherboard) and unfortunately I highly doubt you'll be able to add a real hard drive.

The reason it keeps bringing back those icons is because it's reconnecting to the company's network (or at least trying to).  Basically, the reason why the company didn't mind not getting it back is because it's practically useless outside their network.
