vncserver problem: cant get past grey screen and force gnome session start..........

Recommended Posts

Hello Everyone:

I have been fooling with vnc4server, and I have been hit with a problem: If you look at the xstartup file for my sessions, it will say:

#!/bin/sh

# Uncomment the following two lines for normal desktop:
# unset SESSION_MANAGER
# exec /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc

[ -x /etc/vnc/xstartup ] && exec /etc/vnc/xstartup
[ -r $HOME/.Xresources ] && xrdb $HOME/.Xresources
xsetroot -solid grey
vncconfig -iconic &
x-terminal-emulator -geometry 80x24+10+10 -ls -title "$VNCDESKTOP Desktop" &
x-window-manager &

Of course, it tells ya to UNCOMMENT

# Uncomment the following two lines for normal desktop:
# unset SESSION_MANAGER
# exec /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc

If I do, I get a rootweave (grey) desktop and I cant see/do anything with it like this. However, if I do somthing like this:

buddy@heather:~/.vnc$ vncserver :6

New 'heather:6 (buddy)' desktop is heather:6

Starting applications specified in /home/buddy/.vnc/xstartup
Log file is /home/buddy/.vnc/heather:6.log

buddy@heather:~/.vnc$

Then I go and open a desktop: buddy-baker.us:6 I get a terminal window, and I was told that I could then run gnome-session: I do that, and get:

buddy@heather:~$ gnome-session
SESSION_MANAGER=local/heather:/tmp/.ICE-unix/4634

It works like this, but I want to change it to NO GRAY desktop ever returns, it uses gnome-session, and hopefully, get rid of these errors, Can anyone tell me how to do that? Ive only ever gotten this working without errors ONCE and every other time, gotten the stupid grey desktop - This can work if I leave the two top l;ines commented out......I will need vnc to remotely admin my desktop from home because the server will be leaving once I clear a few more problems up.........problem is that NO ONE seems to be able to open this thing with x-windows-manager, without this problem of grey screen

Can anyone help me here? I need to be ablle to do this.......

Brian
