Ubuntu 6.06 LTS Desktop Edition approaches end-of-life

Ubuntu Release Manager Steve Langasek has announced that Ubuntu 6.06 LTS (code named Dapper Drake) Desktop Edition will reach its end-of-life on Tuesday the 14th of July, 2009. Ubuntu 6.06 LTS was originally launched on the 1st of June, 2006 and included the 2.6.15 Linux kernel. The 6.06 LTS release was the first to feature a new graphical installer based on the LiveCD and included MySQL 5.0, Firefox 1.5 and OpenOffice 2.0. After the 14th of July, no new updates, including security updates and critical fixes, will be available for the Desktop Edition of Dapper Drake. However the server edition – Ubuntu 6.06 LTS Server Edition, won't reach its end-of-life until June of 2011.

Dapper Drake users are advised to upgrade to version 8.04 LTS or to version 9.04 to continue receiving updates. The Long Term Support versions of Ubuntu are supported for three years for the desktop releases and five years for server releases. The standard releases are supported for 18 months of updates for both the desktop and server versions.
