Repair Install of Windows XP

At some point in time you may come across a problem with Windows that you just can’t fix. This is mostly used instead of a clean install because it attempts to only fix your copy of Windows, without having to delete any files. It is very important to back up all important, and non-replaceable files before attempting a repair install. While the main purpose is to repair Windows without losing files; there is always a chance something could go wrong, or a repair install could not be carried out. I would also recommend disconnecting your modem from the computer, as the Windows Firewall will not be active during the repair install procedure.

1. The first thing you need to do is boot your computer from the Windows XP CD. Insert the CD, then reboot your computer. Upon reboot you should be taken to a black screen asking you to press any key to boot from the CD. Proceed and do so.

2. You will be taken to the Windows XP setup screen. You should see three options on the screen. DO NOT CHOOSE THE SECOND OPTION. DO NOT PRESS “Râ€. Even though the second option says to repair, do not select that option. Instead, press ENTER which selects Windows XP setup.

3. You will be asked to accept the license agreement. Once you do so, it will search your hard drive for the appropriate files.

4. When it finishes, you should be given a screen asking which XP installation you want to repair. In most cases, there will only be one choice. Select the one you would like to repair. Repair the selected installation by pressing “Râ€. If you do not see a repair option, you will need to do a clean install. Your version of Windows could have been damaged beyond repair.

5. Setup will proceed to copy the needed files to your computer, and reboot. You will be asked again if you would like to boot from the CD. Don’t press anything; just let the timer run out. Your setup will continue, and look as if you were doing a clean install, but all of your files and settings will remain.

Important: Do not activate Windows over the internet right away. Enable a firewall, then download all Windows Updates.
