Computer Slowing Down/sluggish[RESOLVED]

Recommended Posts

Hello, It's been a while since I've posted here, which is a good thing seeing that the fixes you provided last time were extremely helpful. However, as of late my computer has begun to run extremely sluggish, and slow, with quick freezes every so often. I do not recall installing anything new, but I do share the computer with my parents who are extremely computer illiterate. It might be possible that either of them may have contracted something from the web. In addition to this, my Windows partition has gotten filled to the max, with only 150MB free out of 15GB. I rarely install programs on that partition, and very rarely save any files. Every week or so, I'll receive the "Disk space dangerously low!" message, I'll free up about 600MB, and then get the same message a few days later. I have run Spybot S&D, AVG, Ad-Aware, and my Avast! virus scan performing full system scans in each situation, coming up with little more than saved cookies, and what appeared to be some harmless spyware. With that being said I'll post my HJT and see if anything can be deciphered from it. I thank you in advance for your time!

Hello and Welcome to BT. :)

I am MoNsTeReNeRgY22 and I will be assisting you with your malware problem today.

We need to update your version of Hijackthis to the latest release.

Please find and delete the Hijackthis.exe you already have installed.

Save HJTInstall.exe to your Desktop.

Double click on the HJTInstall.exe icon to start the program.

By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis

After the final dialogue box it will launch HijackThis.

Click on the scan button. It will scan and then ask you to save the log.

Save the log, and post me it in your next reply.

Hey,

Happy Easter as well!

Please download ComboFix from Here or Here to your Desktop.

**Note: In the event you already have Combofix, this is a new version that I need you to download. It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**

For more information regarding this download, please visit this webpage: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

  1. Please, never rename Combofix unless instructed.
  2. Close any open browsers.
  3. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

    -----------------------------------------------------------

    • Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before performing a scan. They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results".
    • Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive. If yours is not listed and you don't know how to disable it, please ask.

      -----------------------------------------------------------

  • Close any open browsers.
  • WARNING: Combofix will disconnect your machine from the Internet as soon as it starts
  • Please do not attempt to re-connect your machine back to the Internet until Combofix has completely finished.
  • If there is no internet connection after running Combofix, then restart your computer to restore back your connection.

-----------------------------------------------------------

[*]Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.

[*]When finished, it will produce a report for you.

[*]Please post the "C:\ComboFix.txt" along with a new HijackThis log for further review.

**Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall**

  • Highlight and Copy (CTRL + C) the complete report, and Paste (CTRL + V) in a new reply to this post

If Automatic cleaning with Submit samples hangs, click Cancel, then New Scan

  • When the cleaning option is presented, Uncheck Submit samples to F-Secure
  • Click Automatic cleaning

Nice job your log looks clean!

How is it running?

Please use the following suggestion to help prevent reinfection.

Also, you may delete any tools I had you download during the cleaning process.

Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove infected files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs from changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected)Now we need to make a new System Restore Point for your PC, please do the following

  • Click Start, Settings, Control Panel
  • Double-click the System icon
  • Click the Performance tab, File System, Troubleshooting tab
  • Check "Turn off System Restore" and click "Apply". Please give a moment as it will delete the old System Restore points
  • Then uncheck "Turn off System Restore" which will create a new System Restore point
  • Click OK

I highly recommend downloading the following programs, to keep malware of your computer to begin with.

The following is a list of tools and utilities that I like to suggest to people. This list is full of great tools and utilities to help you understand how you got infected and how to keep from getting infected again.

Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware - A very powerful tool which searches and kills malware that infects your system.

SpywareBlaster - Great prevention tool to keep malware from installing on your system.

**Tutorial on installing & using this product can be found HERE**

SpywareGuard - Works as a Spyware "Shield" to protect your computer from getting malware in the first place.

**Tutorial on installing & using this product can be found HERE**

IE-SpyAd - Puts over 5000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all.

**Tutorial on installing & using this product can be found HERE**

ATF Cleaner - Cleans temporary files from IE and Windows, empties the recycle bin and more. Great tool to help speed up your computer and knock out malware that like to reside in the temp folders.

Antivirus Program An Antivirus program is a must in today's digital world! I recommend avast! 4 Home Edition, AVG, or Anti-Vir.

DO NOT install more than one Antivirus program. They will conflict, and provide less protection, not more.

Firewall A firewall is definitely a must have to protect your computer from hackers. I recommend Comodo, Online Armor, or Outpost.

**Tutorial on Firewalls can be found HERE**

Windows Updates - It is very important to make sure that both Internet Explorer and Windows are kept current with the latest critical security patches from Microsoft. To do this just start Internet Explorer and select Tools > Windows Update, and follow the online instructions from there.

You must stay on top of your updates at all times, for the above mentioned applications.

It is vitally important to stay on top of your critical updates provided by Microsoft.

And finally a little action-smiley-036.gifHow did I get infected in the first place?(by Tony Klein)

Good luck and safe surfing :)

Hey,

We can do a scan to see what can be casuing your PC to be slow.

Please register (it's free, don't worry) with PCPitStop and run the full tests here:

http://www.pcpitstop.com/pcpitstop/default.asp

When the tests are complete, a results page will pop up. Click "Share these results with TechExpress" on the right-hand side. Then copy the URL provided and post it here for me.

http://www.pcpitstop.com/techexpress.asp?id=CE9STWBLM6GSPL9G is the link. looks to be running decently. just did a defrag check, and apparently my c: drive is 48% fragmented... i think after i get it defragged it may pick up a bit. rescanned with avast!, avg, SBs&d, all clean. i think the problem now is just the lack of storage space on the drives. i appreciate all the help you've provided!

PCPitStop noted several things that you can do to improve the shape your computer is in.

Pay particular attention to these items:

• Upgrade disk space (Drive C):

You have very little disk space. Try to free up some space by uninstalling programs that you no longer use.

• Defragment files (Drive C)

Defragmenting is a must. It's one of the large reasons for system slowdowns. I use Diskeeper Lite to defragment. It is the trial version of Diskeeper, and you can use it forever. I recommend installing it and defragmenting as soon as possible
