with out a install disk

i think it has a recovery console

ok the campany is going to reposess

and he has his data on it and wants to save the data

and then clear the hdd because he dosent want any one to see his data

his dad said i think he has been to those naughty sites

can that data be transfered to another hdd

or has it got to be transfered to cd's

hasent xp got a sys where by you can

transfer from one hdd to another

i had a brief look in there

and all i saw was transfer to a floppy

that is way outside my territory

so im asking you

i would never by a compt with out a disk

i would be completely lost

Doesn't he have a cd burner?

Windows has a basic burning program built in.

Chances are he has USB... transfer the data to thumb drive(s); archive, and/or then transfer to another system.

Windows XP can also transfer OE data and other settings through its transfer wizard (it will ask you to create a floppy for the wizard to run... the floppy acts as an intermediary for the wizard to run on both computers (if you have another XP or Vista computer to transfer to that is)... where then you can download the data to thumb drive(s) or other media, and then to the new system. Last time I did this I was able to use a 1GB thumb drive for all the data, where it would have required some unwieldly number of floppies (actually supported!)

I've also seen (on TV) a 'smart cable' that connects two machines (98SE, XP, Vista) for easy transfer of data through its own firmware(?) interface. urk! It's a bit expensive: The Tornado

Just slave another hard drive in it then transfer the data to that. Once done remove the slaved hard drive and nuke the original hard drive with DBAN or KillDisk.
