M$'s New Top-secret 'surface'

M$ unveils a great new system. New Surface

“Pretty exciting, eh?†Gates said with a sly smile, when he put his hand down on what looked initially like a low, black coffee table: At the touch of his hand, the hard, plastic tabletop suddenly dissolved into what looked like tiny ripples of water. The ‘water’ responded to each of his fingers and the ripples rushed quickly away in every direction. To do things on Surface’s tabletop screen, you reach down, touch it and push it. To make the image you see on the screen bigger, spread your fingers. To make it smaller, squeeze your fingers together. To move something into the trash, push it into the trash with your hand. And it allows what Microsoft calls “Multi-Touch†and “Multi-User†interaction — namely, more than one person can interact with it at a time. Try that with your home computer.

Yeah, touchscreens with multiple inputs have been around for a while, though not in a consumer product that I'm aware of. Didn't check the link, but it just sounds like they have applications that "look" snazzy for a product that's been out but not in general circulation.

Hmm, Gates, "stealing" someone else's thunder? Naw!

This is beyond a simple touchscreen. They showed the demonstration on the Today show. It will first be released to restaurants, casinos and etc. You can lay your credit card on it which then gets recognized and drag your menu item to where the credit card's image is. It will tally your bill, tip included. They show just setting a camera on the surface then directly accessing the pictures stored on the camera. To change the picture size just touch the diagonal corners with your fingers and move them outward or inward. I hope it has an on-screen keyboard. I can't wait.
