My first car was a Yugo as I was born and living in Yugoslavija at the time. I guess most here are familiar with how great that car was :P

Later it was a Volvo 240DL, a beast and it'd probably still be alive today if a semi hadn't run it over in a parking lot, I then upgraded to a 1990 Honda Civic LX and only last year replaced it with a 1999 Audi A6.

I was actually considering buying that exact same Jetta that B now owns before going for the older Audi and its a great car, congrats on the purchase.

EDIT: I see the pics now your Jetta is a 2.5, that's the 5 cylinder inline engine right? Was the 4 cyl turbo available?

Pretty sure the Wolfsburg Edition includes the turbo.

Why did Yugos come standard with rear window defrosters? To keep your hands warm when you're pushing it.

Ha.

Bet that Audi's sweet!

Thanks for the afternoon laugh, it did come with rear window defrosters surprisingly haha. I didn't have many problems with the car but my cousin was a mechanic and it was well maintained although I have heard horror stories. A few of my relatives still drive them back in the "old country" haha.

The Audi is 8 years old very soon but it runs and still looks like a champ.

As for the Jetta, I don't think they market the Wolfsburg here in Canada or at least it wasn't available when I was looking; the 2.5 definitely wasn't available in a turbo version.

Newer cars are SO much better than they were in the 70's and 80's. Your Audi probably hasn't aged much, and that Jetta will still be in terrific shape eight years from now. When I bought my Explorer it was five years old and there wasn't much to distinguish it from brand new.

You're completely right, if you take care of cars they can run for much longer than they used to be able to, its good to see especially for people like me who like driving an older car and knowing all the ins and outs.

Jeesh, my first was an '80 Camero. Only thing "stock was the oil pan. Ran it hard for a few years until I got my first "new" ride. I would run Valvoline 20-50. Oil would be like water after a few days from the heat of the engine. (I guess). Let a friend make a "spin" on night, camee back with the tranny cooler line spewing oil. From that night on it had to be manually shifted. But she still ran.....

Driving the wifes had me down Windstar. Don't laugh, make a nice covered truck. Took the 3rd row seat out. It is at 180.8k and still kickin'. I am pushing for 200k+. I add about 50-60 miles per day, and oil and gas as needed.

I told the kids they will get it when it is time for them to drive, daughter (oldest) says she'll pass. Son said he'll take it, guess I will have to do regular inspections so it does not become a "Shaggin' Wagon".

That made me laugh. Exactly the responses you'd expect from each of them. :D

First car??

Hmm...kids nowadays eh...brand spankin new cars right after getting your license..

Most of us older folk never got a brand new car until after we were married or sumthin!

My first car was a 1965 Ford Comet, 289...went like a bat outta HE^^ actually. Was my mom's car and me an my brother bought it off her for $50.

She then got a 1966 Pontiac Stratochief with a 327 that was just a ROCKET!!! For a stock 327 that thing was ballsy (and I could start it with a butter knife ;) )

I've had over 100 cars in my time, used to race and build race engines for a time too, so I've had allot of muscle cars...REAL muscle too, like a 66 Chevelle 2 door with 895 BHP from a very, very worked over 427 R.A.T. Oh-oh...starting to reminisce too much.

Didn't get my first " Brand New Car" until 1995 actually, until then I always got them about a year old so the other guy paid "Lot Prices" and I saved.

Actually the kids at school with brand new (or just newer) BMW's and Mercedes were the ones that ticked me off. There were other new vehicles ticked me off too cause first off it seemed kinda unfair but then later I no longer cared after finding my love 92-00 Civics, 88-91 CRX's, 88-2001 Integras, and others like that. I just thought those kids parents were crazy. My parents didn't trust me or my Brother with newer vehicles.

They handed him down my Dad's 86 Pontiac Sunbird Sedan in 1998 after my dad bought himself a brand new 1998 Toyota Tacoma Base Model with the Chrome Package, then they bought him an 88 Pontiac Fiero in 1999 (what a god awful car that was) then in 01 he bought himself a 1995 Honda Civic EX 2 Door. After that he bought a 1998 Toyota 4Runner in 2004 and sold the Civic. He still has the 4Runner and now his wife's 03 Cavalier along with it. She got that thing new from her mom though.

I started off in 2004 with an 1985 Sunbird Hatchback (so I had technically started with a car 7 years older than my brother's) after only a few months it breaks down and my dad bought me a 1995 Honda Civic EX 2 Door......from my brother. 2 years later I wreck it and my dad feeling pity for me (and realizing he sunk over 5 grand into repairs on the POS Fiero of my brothers) bought me my current ride a 1996 Honda Civic CX (BOTTOMEST OF BOTTOM END) with a B16A2 engine swap (highest end motor for a Civic in 1999-2000 or a DelSol in 1996-1997 HA!! Mine came from a 99 Civic Si).

So not all kids today get new cars. I've never even driven a new car. I drove my mom's 03 PT Cruiser but it wasn't new by the time I drove it. (I hate that car). Hmmm, I wanna know what drivin a new car is like. Time to go test drivin this weekend. Darrel Waltrip Honda/Volvo, here I come. Get me an S2000 ready.

*Edit PS I'm 19 and I've never had a vehicle less than 10 years old.

Back in MY day ...

I grew up in Chicago, never felt the need for a car at all, moved to the 'burbs when I graduated High School (middle 70's) and ... bought myself a brand new car. The one I wanted, the one I had posters of in my room, the one I had brochures from every auto show going back for years. I made a collage featuring the car on my bedroom door with pictures from every source I could find. Damn, I really wanted that car, so I bought it first chance I had.

Glad I did 'cause, bless it's little soul, I had the time of my life with that car (and learned a lot of hard lessons). Thirty years later and I still wish I had one in new condition. That was one tough cookie.

First car was a '74 Ford Maverick with the inline 4 cylinder engine. Had slicks on the back and mini's on the front. Chromed baby moons, and NOS. helped rebuild that car when my cousin owned it, 4 speed auto with a racing shifter kit installed. put it in first, and then pop the accelerator at around 30MPH and it would pop to 2nd, at 60MPH you could pop it to 3rd, at 80 you could pop it one more time to fourth.

I had a 5 point racing harness for the driver seat. I ran pinks constantly with that thing. Can't tell ya how many Honda Civic SI's, Corvettes, or mustangs I sold because of that baby. Had it hit with radar when I had the NOS running and it topped out at 180MPH. That thing was a rocket. The engine was bored over 4:2 ratio with racing cam and reinforced timing chain.

Now I'm running a '94 Ford Escort GT with a 5 spd manual with over 228,000 miles on it. The only things that aren't OEM are tires, brakes shoes, 2 calipers, spark plugs, belts, and light bulbs, front bumber. It still has the original clutch in it from when my wife bought it brand new in 1994. and it still runs like it just came off the showroom floor, plenty of power in it.

I only have one pic anywhere close to decent of my first car and it's being eclipsed by my first Civic.

And here it is. The @$$ end of my 1985 Pontiac Sunbird Hatchback 3spd Auto Base model with Alloys. Of course the prominent car is my old 1995 Honda Civic EX 2Dr 5spd Manual about 4-5 months into me having it LONG before I put the wheels on it and a few months before I put the full amber corner lights on it. (Man this picture is old)

Isn't it amazing how people are so into their cars!

I've had some doozies in my day, as I'm sure many of you have had, and also some real dogs too, but I'll never forget my favorites.

1969 Mustang Mach I, 428 Super CJ that pulled wheelies in stock config...

1974 Datsun (Nissan) 240Z, and my 76 280Z...both awesome fast & solid lil cars.

Both of my 68 2 door Beaumont's (one red/white, one blue/white)

My 66 Pearl White Chevelle 2 door, with an 895 HP 427 (race block & heads), dual 750cfm Hollies...oooooo, this one was soooo fast, 7.86 in the 1/4 @ 188 mph..in 1976 - 3 gallons to the mile...;)

If only I could have those ones back again

i did not own this one, but i worked on it. it was a 1986 corvette alcohol funny car. has a supercharged 526 keith black hemi with a 14-71 high helix super charger, and a don gerardo injection system. the engine produced about 2500 horsepower. the last year running it in 1990, ended up 3rd in division 3 and #33 in the nation in NHRA.
