Hello

I have a Western Digital SATA-150 200 Gig harddrive which has read errors. I would like to blank the drive before I send it to replacement, because I have some sensitive documents there. (bank records, adresses of important people to me and so on).

However, I can't figure a way to get into the harddrive. Windows (XP) is refusing to run based on read errors at the loading files.

The WD diagnostics tools refuse to run based on the S.M.A.R.T. readings (read error, replaceable sectors is above the limits).

DBAN refuses to run because the S.M.A.R.T. says the drive's failing.

Spinrite can't get access to the drive (Didn't say why. I suspect that it dosn't have SATA drivers. Gibson Research hasn't replied to the support request yet)

So, to summerize: I need a program that a) runs selfcontained B) ignores S.M.A.R.T. c) can access SATA volumes d) has blanking/overwriting capabilities.

Best regards

/ZoRo

AUTOCLAVE works for me but I don't know if it will work with these new drives.

it has been discontinued but google can show you where it is.

I just read the instructions. autoclave only works with IDE.

Well, if the drive is failing; then just open it up and bash the disks inside into broken glass with a sledgehammer. Highly effective at making the data non recoverable.

Other options, which are more dangerous are burning it with thermite or dissolving the ferrite off the disks using acid.
