Computer Randomly Reboots

Recommended Posts

For some reason my computer randomly reboots. Sometimes i go weeks without it happening, other times its daily.

What happens is the computer kinda stops, then turns off then right back on like if you told windows to restart.

There is nothing in the event log,

computer isn't too hot,

power seems to be working fine,

not really sure what there is left to check =/

And it doesn't happen when im doing the same things (that i know of)

It just kind of decides it wants to restart and it does.

Thanks.

Hello, Welcome to BestTechie!

I have seen this problem before ONCE.

I would approach this with the following solution:

Win XP and Win 2000 have a default setting to restart at just about any error. It makes things difficult to analyze when it blows through and restarts the computer. Settings / Control Panel / System / Advanced / Startup and Recovery / Settings. Make sure the box is UNCHECKED where it says "Automatically Restart" under System Failure."

Also, improper use of Msconfig will often cause this. So, if you use Msconfig as a way of keeping programs from starting, stop immediatly.

i agree with Bubba Bob

ms config has been the bug bear of new users

for a long time

in help and support it tells you not

to use it, unless you know what your doing

many times the reason for restarting is a hardware conflict

or an error with in the sys

if the poster has installed hardware recently

try and up date the drivers

video driver is a culprit

You may already have a dumpfile with significant information to why your computer crashed. Check to see if you have this directory(folder)

c:\windows\minidump

if you do, you have a dump file located in it. This can be analyzed with the dumpchk utility.

Well unchecking automatic restart didn't do anything.

since unchecking "automatic restart", has your computer rebooted?

as to the minidump directory, i think you need to enable viewing of hidden files and folders

hi fubz

have you checked for virus/

perhaps the sasser or blaster worm

did you change your ram or hdd settings?

at all

and those hardware drivers

that is an area were you get a restart

it happened to me and when i went and unchecked

that automatic restart box

it gave me a blue screen

tho mine was hard ware trouble

and it involved the hdd pin in the wrong setting

good luck

Yes it has, it did today.

No minidump, I can see hidden files and folders and even the protected system folders, and searched the whole HardDrive. nothing.

Marty,

yup i have checked or viruses, spyware, and all of that good stuff. 100% clean as usual =)

And I haven't changed hardware in this thing for a long while now, so its not that.

i googled your error notice and all indications point to a driver problem

try uninstalling the video driver

reboot then go to device manager and up date the video driver

a notice will appear in you tray if your sys has

found new hardware
