  1. Ha-ha, yep fixed:-) Interesting article indeed.
  2. Of course....partisan politics:-) I'm a Liberal and I'll admit that we can fire a few unfair shots across the bow. However, the media campaign that is being waged against the Obama health care plan is different in one respect. Obama's enemies have very deep pockets, they can afford to spend hundreds of millions in an attempt to sway public opinion. When Liberals throw a few jabs we don't have the financial clout of the pharmaceutical companies behind us. To say the debate is not on a level playing field is an understatement. As an interested outsider living north of your great country I
  3. Partisan politics at its finest, marty:) They did the same to Clinton when he was President. Obama has a tough hill to climb, he has very powerful enemies in the pharmaceutical and insurance industries (their lobbyists can afford to spend hundreds of millions on trying to block health care reform). I certainly hope Obama really is a cool, tough customer. He is going to need to be one.
  4. Moving this topic to the World and Politics forum.
  5. You're welcome, marty:-) Think about it though. You can make Linux run very well on older PCs. My oldest Slackware 13.0 box is a Plll 667 MHz IBM 300PL with 256 MB RAM. It runs very well using the Fluxbox window manager. True. Ubuntu will not run very well if at all on a low RAM box with the default configuration. But, if you use a lighter desktop environment it will work if you have the bare minimum amount of system resources. Also you can download the alt Ubuntu iso which is designed for low RAM boxes. Any time that I get my hands on an older piece of s#** computer that no one wants
  6. Hey marty, One way to speed up Ubuntu is to turn off system services that you don't need. For example, if you're not running a web server or a mail server then you don't need apache or sendmail launching when your system boots-up. Also, you could try a different desktop environment. You could install XFce on your Ubuntu box. XFce runs a lot lighter than KDE or Gnome, it uses less RAM. My point is you can make your Linux box faster with a bit of tinkering. To install xfce: sudo apt-get install xfce Then when your computer boots up and you get to the log-in screen for Ubuntu you can choose
  7. Yeah...I'll do that on occasion, but, lately I've become lazy and I use the kernel that is offered with Slack. Building a kernel is fun:-)
  8. Rest in peace, Gary. We will miss you, man!

Ha-ha, hopefully they didn't get too much sun:-)
  10. I agree with the statement that no operating system is perfectly secure. The end user is a critical component in keeping a system secure, patched, and hardened. The BSDs are pretty secure.

Rest up and take it slow, marty:) Good to see you, man! I hope you're feeling up to par soon!
  12. Further to my last post. Another complaint I frequently read about Slackware is that it is hard to set-up and configure. This is partly true as you do need to manually partition your hard drive. I recommend that you use cfdisk to partition your hard drive as that utility is easy to use. In past versions of Slackware it was necessary to manually set-up your xorg.conf video settings. In Slackware 13.0 this is no longer needed. For most video cards the new version of Xorg will automagically set-up up your display settings for you. I finished my upgrade cycle to Slackware 13.0 on Thursday and
  13. LOL, I've noticed that Still, I really like Thunderbird, and think that it an excellent free alternative. There's also Outlook, which comes with Office. Of course... not free though. Yep, I also like TBird. I like how it sets up nicely with IMAP and handles multiple accounts. Agreed. Outlook is an excellent e-mail client.
  14. Yep. President GW Bush pretty-much stomped all over your civil liberties during his 8 long years in office.
  15. Happy Birthday, Flatiron! I hope you enjoyed your day.
  16. I'm running 7 at work. So far I really like it. The only thing I've noticed is that Windows 7 takes a lot longer to copy files. For example, when I was running Debian 5.0 Linux on my office computer and I wanted to copy files from my thumb drive onto my HD it would take less than a minute. Now with 7 it takes at least 4X as long. All in all I have not encountered any deal breakers yet with 7.
  17. Further to my previous post. Slackware now ships with a very useful utility called src2pkg. src2pkg is a package creation tool that allows you to take third party source code and create a Slackware package that can easily be installed on your Slackware system. This makes upgrading packages very simple as you go from one version of a program to anotther. src2pkg manual
  18. One of the complaints that I frequently read about Slackware Linux is that it does not have a package management system, that is, you need to install everything manually or compile programs from source code. That is not entirely true. You can of course install your programs manually and compile from source, but, there are a few utilities that ship with Slackware that help to automate program installation. The utility pkgtool is a nifty ncurses program that lets you add and remove programs from your Slackware system. pkgtool Also, slackpkg allows you to connect to an official Slackware mirror
  19. Fresh install of Slackware 13.0, XFce 4.6.1. Same good old Slackware.
  20. A fair point, JDoors. But, let us post our political stuff over here in this forum. My deepest sympathies go out to the Kennedy family.
  21. Slackware 13.0 released!!! Downloaded it last night and will install today. Congratulations Pat, Robby, Eric and the entire Slackware team:-) I'll be going to the Slackware store today to buy a DVD. Slackers worldwide have waited a long time for this:-) hitest
  22. Your opinion is a valid one. However, I don't think it is appropriate to politicize a tribute thread in Open Chat by bringing up Senator Kennedy's past misdeeds. We prefer that politics is discussed in the appropriate forum. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mary_Jo_Kopechne This thread has become a bit partisan and political which is fine. I'm moving this thread to the World and Politics forum.
