well this definately isn't your everyday linux install. here is what I have just done. booted into Ubuntu. switched eth0 over to DHCP, of course it just sat there trying to get an IP address. while that was going, I opened a root terminal and started tcpdump -v. Then I went and put in the full path as shanenin suggested go this response: bash: /sbin/dhcpc: unknown command So appearantly dhcpc doesn't exist on Ubuntu. so just for grins and giggles I looked at another item that is on Ubuntu dhclient. ok, here is the latest. tried what Iccaros suggested, no joy. Then I went and redid the dhcpc /dev/eth0 command and this time I got this reply. My bad on the first run, I forgot the dhcpc part. so what I did was turn around and forced a reinstall of Ubuntu. I now have my eth0 set up as a static IP just to allow me access to the desktop. Since I'm not assigned a static IP from my ISP, it won't give me internet access. and trying to reset the system to dhcp rather than a static IP, I get the following in my syslog. It just does that continually. so it's like it's getting offered but isn't tak

ok I not only did I do the steps you mentioned but I took a look at my syslog paying particular attention to anything in regards to DHCP and I'm finding a discrepency between Windows and Ubuntu. it would also be adviseable to install an Anti-Virus program. It appears that you are not running one at this time. I would recommend Avast or AVG after choosing one, install and let it scan your system then post a fresh Hijack this log.

naruku, yes I can hook up using windows with no issues. it's my linux install that is kaput when it does dhcp. According to the phone company when I was talking to them they were seeing the release of the IP address but they were not seeing any request for one when I booted to Linux. Some ISP's will bounce them like that because their E-Mail program sees it as SPAM and will do that. Sometimes a way to get arround that is by sending it to yourself in the To: box and the rest in the BCC: box. Why would it view a normal message as spam - unless your subject is Free V1agra Cod1n3, T33nage G1r1s! some filters, like my email server for my site, are designed to bounce the email after a certain number of email addresses are included in the To: line. basically they count the number of recipients and if it meets the criteria set by the email server admin, it is classified as spam.

I leave mine on, I have my power settings set up to turn off (spin down) the HDD's after 30 minutes of downtime. I have compared my electric bill based on the comp being up 24/7 and being turned on/off for an entire month. my results lead me to leave it on. The electricity usage that my computer used when on 24/7 amounted to a whole 16 cent increase for the entire month. to me 16 cents is not that much of a savings.

They may have it in .htaccess. if thats the case, then you won't be able to get it without contacting the owner directly. Regardless, it would still be a good idea to contact the owner and get permission to do that. He/she may not want the game put on another server, even with credits.

from what it sounds like, your mobo may be screwed up, the IDE port that you need to plug the cd drive into on the mobo may be bad.

ok, I did the single user mode. here is what is happening. sorry I have to type this out since I can't grab a screenshot or logfile. splash screen shows up, I get the booting Linux Kernel. loads modules, gets all the way to configuring newtork interfaces and hangs right there, up until the system puts itself into a state of hibernation some how, about 30 minutes later. Now it's at this point that my IP address from Windows is released. Not if the dhcp problem is with the telco router, a home router will still need to recieve its IP through dhcp (unless specifically configured as static). my thought was windows was able to get an address using dhcp, so the router may also be able to get one. the only problem is right now I don't have the money for a new router. won't have it until the middle of the month at the earliest, lots of bills due right now.
