  1. are you wanting the other 3 visible to the other computer? This is why I don't agree with partioning Hard drives, it's more complicated then it's worth.
  2. WAY true. "OK, just gonna check the mail before I go to bed ... " Four hours later .... bed??? what's that? [me]"Hi honey sleep well" [her]"you were up all nite again weren't you?" [me]"umm, not exactly, I did take a little cat nap on the keyboard" [her]"Great, another keyboard we have to replace" [me]"at least I slept" [her] walks away mumbling under her breath and shaking her head "I had to marry a geek and let him have access to the home computer." [me]doghouse again
  3. hi an welcome to besttechie. it seems you have a bit of a mess here, so lets get it all cleaned up. since you already rean spybot and Ad-aware we dont' need to worry about them at the moment. boot safe mode and run hijack this, close all browsers and any open Windows, making sure that only HijackThis is open. Scan and when it finishes, put an X in the boxes, only next to these following items, then click fix checked. 4. ok, so you know you have the System32 trojan, along with a couple of other trojans and worms. So lets see if we can get rid of it. We like to start with an online virus and trojan scan. Especially since you didn't have any antivirus software on your system. Please run a free online virus scan here (tick the "Auto Clean" checkbox): http://housecall.antivirus.com/ And a free trojan scan here: http://www.moosoft.com/ Reboot your PC. If you would please, rescan with HijackThis and post a fresh log in this same topic, and we'll remove what's left.
  5. I pay $135 for my setup, but that includes, cable, DSL, and my phone bill all together. It's the phone bill that screws up my price. everywhere outside of town is long distance. $30 for digital cable, $40 for my DSL, $60 appox. for phone a month. But I can't complain it's all on fiber optic. as for my cable the only thing I dont' have is the movie channels. If I want those, it will cost me an extra $10 a month for all of them.

    Help!

Does the mouse work properly on another system? The optical beam going out is puzzling, could be faulty hardware. I would try all the different devices under /dev/input as well as /dev/mouse and /dev/psaux if they exist, I would also try Option "Protocol" "auto" yes, I'm using it right now on Windows. no issues. The only time it doesn't work is with Linux. This is a new GE optical mouse. Been using the old ball mouse for the last 7 or 8 months, but got tired of having to continuously clean that stupid things ball, and rollers. /dev/psaux doesn't exist in my dev file. I'll try that and jcl

    Help!

ok I did a dmesg and was surprise with what I found in it. [4294715.168000] input: ImExPS/2 Generic Explorer Mouse on isa0060/serio1 before I ran the dmesg, I replaced my optical mouse with the ball mouse, and here is the line from when that was done. Help!

Ok, well I rehooked my optical mouse up after commenting out the option in /etc/X11/xorg.conf didn't do anything. when I move my mouse the optic light goes out. now I can plug my ball mouse in and it still works. Any other ideas that might help???

    Help!

ok, I understand that a little better thanks I will try it with commenting out Option "Protocol" "ImPS/2" I know when I did the ls /dev/input it did show /dev/input/mice. now for grins and giggles i decided to do a little exploring. so using nautilus I looked in /dev/input and found the following Mice and mouse0. dunno if that helps any or not. as I was searching around the ubuntu forums, what I have gathered this is a issue that is possibly a bug with the 2.6 Kernel. I have a feeling that it's not Kernel related tho. just one of those gut instincts

    Geeks To Go

did you try clearing your browser cache, and delete you cookies? if the cookie has changed any, that could prevent you from getting in.
  11. do the normal uninstall from add/remove programs. Then go to my computer, click on tools, folder options, show hidden folders. next navigate to C:/documents and settings/your screenname/application data/Mozilla remove all instances of Firefox. then try a clean install. if it is still screwing up I would then recommend posting a Hijack This log in the malware forum for review. You might have something malicious running there.

    Help!

well I tried the ls /dev/input as you posted. didnt' work. I still have no mouse usage. for some reason it just doesn't like my optical mouse. It worked fine in DSL. and my optical mouse used to work when I had the previous version (hoary) installed. but now it doesn't, I'll wander around the ubuntu forums and see if I can find any answers. I know it is getting flooded with this issue. However, so far everyone I have seen complaining about it uses a USB mouse instead of a PS2 mouse. go figure. Also I called the phone company about the previous problem. appearantly the way it sounds DSL kicked

    Help!

like I said before it's all greek to me, maybe this will make sense to ya. Section "InputDevice" Identifier "Configured Mouse" Driver "mouse" Option "CorePointer" Option "Device" "/dev/input/mice" Option "Protocol" "ImPS/2" Option "Emulate3Buttons" "true" Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5" EndSection I will try the other option after I get through updating the OS. I'm currently using my ball mouse instead of the optical, would that be better done in terminal mode?
  14. In my case it's because unlike my Yahoo account, at least my thunderbird email system will go ahead and delete the junk mail from my spam mail when it gets my email from my allowed accounts. plus this way my email is avialable on the computer for viewing in offline mode, you can't do that with yahoo or gmail, you have to have a live connection and the browser open.

I wonder, since DSL is debian based if I could use the mousedev module to fix that issue.

    Help!

ok, I'm doing this from DSL live cd setup. here is the lsmod report. my next step will be to boot to Ubuntu and see if it's working on the net or not. if not I will then get an lsmod from it and make another post with it. I might consider doing an install of this but I prefer Gnome over KDE worse case scenario I adjust. Anyway enough rambling, here is the lsmod report. root@ttyp0[dsl]* Module Size Used by Not tainted ext3 64452 0 (autoclean) jbd 46516 0 (autoclean) [ext3] mousedev 3832 0 (unused) af_packet 13544 0 (autoclean) nks_iso8859-1 2844 0 (autoclean)

    Help!

I have DSL here already, thats what I was thinking about using as my Server OS. don't know if it's got to be installed or if I can do a live cd off of it. I will check. otherwise I will have to install it to test everything out, I will do that this afternoon, have to leave in about 45minutes to take my daughter to the Doctor for a follow-up on her ear infection & Bronchitus episode.
  19. then your problem is lubrication related. dust built up on it, and now the gears can't engage properly to open it on the first run. If you have pets, or dont' dust very frequently, that happens quite often. I have gone through 3 cd-rw's on my machine in the last 7 years because of that issue. Dang dog.
  20. and to help keep spam down, even if you did opt in for the delivery like their email may say. do the following: don't use the link on the email to "remove your email address from their database" just put it in your message filters to delete it. Some ISP's also have the option to add the email to their junk mail filter. thats what mine does. so I add the address to their junk mail filter and it deletes it on arrival or bounces it back, as a "bad address" or it had delivery failures. set your email program, using message filters again, to only allow email from souces you list to be delivered to
  21. in regards to the cd-rw drive, it sounds like there might be a little dust buildup on the gears inside. that is usually what causes that. take a can of compressed air and blow it out when it's open, see if that helps. if not then it could be a lubrication problem. which it would then be best just to replace the cd-rw drive.
  22. nod32 is continually ranked in the #1 position of the top ten AV prgrams to get. some of those rankings are even noted by their competitors.
  23. if it's grey out ( not active) then that means it's already set to private. it would be active if you were sharing it.

    Help!

well Hitest that would work except I don't have any internet connectivity, which is why I started this thread. therefore I can not get it from synaptic. Unlike Mandriva, ubuntu doesn't give you everything on disk. it only installs base items and then you download the rest from their repos. You are correct...If you check /sbin for dhcpc, it's not there, but dhclient is and when I run sudo dhclient It seems to reacquire my IP Thats the next step I plan on trying. although I think the issue is on the phone companies end. especially since i did a reinstall of Ubuntu and I still can't connect to
  25. hi baker7 i can tell ya your all clean. from the looks of your log. However just to be on the safe side could you download and run CWShredder. you can just use the scan only button unless it finds something, then you will want to run it again using the fix button. Make sure you check for updates before beginning the scan. and let us know how it turns out.
