  1. I didn't notice that it had been cut off. I guess "Check Post Length" doesn't really work... Here's the full HJT log: Logfile of HijackThis v1.99.1 Scan saved at 12:50:59 PM, on 6/3/2006 Platform: Windows ME (Win9x 4.90.3000) MSIE: Internet Explorer v6.00 SP1 (6.00.2800.1106) Running processes: C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\KERNEL32.DLL C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\MSGSRV32.EXE C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\mmtask.tsk C:\WINDOWS\ACCSTAT.EXE C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\MPREXE.EXE C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\MSTASK.EXE C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\SSDPSRV.EXE C:\PROGRAM FILES\ADAPTEC\GOBACK\GBPOLL.EXE C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\KB891711\KB891711.EXE C:\PROGRAM FILES\A
  2. iccaros: I'm curious as to which VIA system(s) have hardware mpeg4 decoding. I used a M10000 with a 1GHz chip for a while. It played DVDs great but stuttered on most mpeg4 video. I've also tried VLC's "on the fly" encoding, but it seemed very slow, and had poor quality, being barely watchable on a standard def TV... I speak only from my own experiences with this but if iccaros could get it working with that kind of a system, I've no doubt that it's possible. You'd still want to encode at a rate below your maximum throughput at whatever range your going for. You could transfer a large file from
  3. Over a reasonable distance, you certainly could. 802.11b has a maximum theoretical throughput of 11Mbps but degrades as distance from the source increases. For video, you'll most likely have to reencode the videos into a format that supports streaming such as VP7 http://www.on2.com/downloads/vp7-personal/ or WMV 9. Depending on your source video, you can probably encode up to 2Mbps over a fair distance, which is still quite good qualitywise. For audio, pretty much any codec that you can stream from, you can use. My favorite is AACPlus which sounds great even at low bitrates (as low as 40-50Kbp

  5. OK, here are the results of the scans (the scan that automatically ran only did C:\Windows\System). 6. sari, My apologies for the delay. I cannot seem to run the online virus scan. The popup to allow/deny the activex control never shows up and instead I get brought to a page that says: "Error on downloading ActiveScan An error has occurred downloading Panda ActiveScan. Please repeat the process. If the error occurs again, restart your system and try again Possible causes of this error are: Not allowing the application's ActiveX control to be downloaded. Problems with the Internet connection. The error could be due to a download error or an installation error due to lack of hard disk space, p
  7. I have a legit copy of XP Home upgrade and was kind of annoyed that MS put something else unnecessary on my system that can't be uninstalled (that'll teach me to blindly install critical updates!) so I just went into the system32 folder and replaced Wgalogon.dll with another MS dll that doesn't do anything in particular, set it to read only, and rebooted. No more wgacheck.exe (or w/e it's called) in the task manager! The update will still show up as critical in Window Update, so you can just check the do not show box or leave it sitting there until October (just remember to uncheck it every ti
  8. Thanks for your reply. I installed the program and rebooted and get 5 or 6 blue screens saying "Cannot write to drive C:" or "Cannot write files to drive C:" and one other blue screen and it shut itself down (press any key to reboot but instead shut off). On the next boot, I selected safe mode and it booted into a blinking cursor and refused to do anything. After restarting, it is working. With those errors, I'm not sure if the program completed or not... 9. Using your analogy, I'd would have thought it more to be like: You notice that your car's gas mileage has fallen. Upon inspection you find that your car needs a tuneup and your air pressure in your tires is low. Ignoring the need for a tuneup, you opt to inflate the tires to their proper pressure, thereby increasing gas mileage. I wouldn't be "messing with the engine" unless I went and did something stupid to my processor like physically taking it out and attempting the XP -> XP-M conversion to lower heat/power by enabling PowerNOW!. Something like that, I don't know how/why it works, nor d

  11. Very nice! PG2 actually quits now on shutdown. 4 for 4 shutdowns have worked speedily since then and no problems logging of from one account and logging on to another (PG2 used to crash and I'd have to use pgfix). Definitely a Windows expert, many thanks TT_75!
  12. hmmm... That's really not what I wanted to hear. I do remember that it used to run much cooler when I first got it but now my northbridge fan and PSU's intake fan are on the way out as well. The NB fan has seized a couple times already in the past year... I've built plenty of systems in the past but this is the only one that wants to crap out on me and after only 2 years =/
  13. Thanks. I've been using SpywareBlaster ever since Spybot recommended it. I haven't had shutdown issues when I was using SystemSuite 4 or 5 but the latest version conflicts with so many programs it's unusable... AVG+Sygate just doesn't cut it as well as the old SS did. Is there any way perhaps to change the shutdown function to run a program before shutdown (without using a batch)? I could then use pskill and terminate PG2 before Windows attempts to shutdown. There's plenty of "run at boot" but I haven't seen a good "run before shutdown" that I can use the normal shutdown button with.
  14. Well, i called around and found someone with a working compressor and I finally just did it. Temps dropped again on burn test. 200x10 1.525v not cleaned 61C burn 51C idle 200x10 1.525v cleaned 49C burn 44C idle 166x13 1.65v (stock) not cleaned >70C burn (reached that in seconds) 64C idle 166x13 1.65v (stock) cleaned 58C burn 51C idle That's a ~12C drop from cleaning and ~10C (additional) drop from voltage. I'm just going to leave the default for this processor for the time being since there seems to be so much objection to it here and ask somewhere like silentpcreview where undervolting/und
  15. Already done. PG2 seems to help with spyware/ads with block http on even over adblock in FF. I'm leaving it...
  16. Well, I've shutdown nonessential startup items and haven't noticed the startup issues back yet though I can't really be too sure if it's really fixed since the issues seem to come quite randomly... I'm pretty sure that it's PG2. If PG2 is shutdown beforehand, Windows shuts down fine. The conflict between PG2 and some firewalls causing long shutdown times is noted in the PG2 forums in quite a long thread. I just thought that I'd throw that out there just in case they were related in some way. Thanks for the help rhema7 and xxkbxx. Now I just have to keep replacing the drivers and hope that the
  17. Gotta love the lack of tact on the internet... Really though, it's the difference between buying 5-10 dollar can of compressed CO2 or air, finding a hose for a compressor that hasn't been used in a couple years, or dragging the computer to a gas station with an air pump or simply booting into BIOS and reduce power consumption (which I've been meaning to do anyway) to reduce heat. I've run several hours P95 torture tests each at 166x12,173x11.5,182x11,200x10 at 1.525v without any problem. It will reboot while starting Windows at 1.475v and fail P95 at 1.500v. I'm still running P95 torture test
  18. The 3000+ is also a different core from my 2700+. I've made sure to keep it as stable as possible and the Prime95 burnin test seems to be fine w/o any problems/errors so far. Still, I'm not sure what FSB actually does to the processor so I'm a little anxious about burning it out... Edit: I know WHY I'm overheating (the dust buildup which is caked in nicely in some spots), I'm just too lazy/cheap to fix it I'd like to keep the Vcore as low as possible, even if I have to reduce the clock speed a bit more since that has the biggest effect on temps. So far I'm seeing 10-15C drop on idle (to 49-52
  19. Thanks for the quick reply. Is there any way to figure out which service/program is causing the hang without flipping one after another? (Perhaps something like a program that will give a detailed account of the last startup) I've updated my graphics drivers to the latest Omega drivers since this problem started but that hasn't fixed it... I also have problems on shutdown (it takes forever to actually shutdown), which seems to be a PG2,Sygate conflict but also seemingly unrelated to the startup issues since I've had shutdown problems LONG before the startup ones...
  20. Occasionally on startup, the welcome screen is frozen. I cannot click to log in to my account and after a few clicks, there's a beep and the mouse freezes up as well. A restart or two fixes it but it's been bugging me a little bit. Any ideas? BTW, I've had this problem since before the heat issues and the underclock/undervolt/FSB OC I mentioned in my other post...
  21. Why do you need to extract? You can simply mount in Alcohol or Daemon Tools to use it. You can pull files out of it directly from the mounted disc if needed.
  22. I have a AthlonXP 2700+ Thoroughbred running on a NF7-S v2. It's been overheating a lot lately on normal tasks (haven't cleaned out the fans in a long time) and I decided it was time to get things cool and lower the computer's power consumption at the same time. I have since dropped the vcore to 1.525v from 1.65v (it runs down to 1.47v quite often - seems the nf7s tends to undervolt a bit anyway) and the mult/fsb to 200x10. Is this combo safe for the CPU/mobo? the CPU is underclocked/undervolted but the FSB is OCd to 200MHz from 166MHz. The RAM is PC3200 with Vdimm at default since I wasn't OC
