  1. you should install on the second harddrive..just to be safe and so windows can not mess up your linux partitions.. (as they used to do with OS/2) as for dual boot. at the end of most linux installs they ask where you want to install the boot loader (for you it would be hda as that is your first drive) and it will set up dual boot for you or ask if you want dual boot. so you don't have to worry about that.. last as for the best.. any answer you get on this is based on personal openion.. and well is worth that much.. for most new users, distrobutions like Mandrake, SUSE, fedora have great insta

  4. nice.. keep up the good work..
  5. the diffrence between a stage one to stage 2 is running the bootstrap script.. stage to you have to build portage and stage 3 just the kernel.. really their is no real diffrence except time.. If you really want to learn Linux you can do this.. build a alinux from scratch system.. after its up add portage adn you will have your gentoo systems but you also had to learn about all the tools in Core utils and Bin utils and you had to build a compiler from scratch.. trust me.. if you just read through the guide you will learn a lot.. a great read even if you never do the build.. http://www.linux
  6. did you try this guide for your wintv 350..I have a 250 and had zero problms with it.. as I here the 350 just adds video out.. http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_Setup_MythTV its for mythtv (I have 3 250 in my myth box running gentoo.. the only mistake I have so far is the celeron processer.. I thought the 2 gig would be good as /I used an mini-itx before with zero problms.. but the celeron locks up everytime I try to transcode video and do something else.. like recorde video.. so I plan on replacing with a P4.. good luck if you have problems you can start another post.. I can use a reason to bu
  7. I did not realize that the proccessor had anything to do with harddrive limitation. not the prcesser..but hte Chipset.. all chipset for the amdk7 are based around the AMD proof of consecept as it was the first X86 chip to not use the same slot as a intel X86 chip.. In the AMD specs they have a 2TB limit on drives for their chipset.. (even though no one has a 2TB disk) its their for addressing so the socket could expand for more options.
  8. "AMD K7 750 Megahertz processor with 512 K cache" I don't think the K7 had a harddrive limitation.. it uses LBA48
  9. for you its a BIOS issue.. but a ide card will fix that.. you can get a ide PCI card for cheep ($30)and not use the ones on the board.. also new dives come with software that you can use to partitoin the drive.. its loads a preloaded on the harddrive.. showes to the Bios at the Bios limits but translates so the Os can use it at full size
  10. Thanks looks great..I am going to try a new release next week.. It will add the new art.. fix some bugs and add the new openoffice along with apache server and webmin so you can use it to create a serever on the fly with out installing..
  11. you musthave posted while I was typing as I did not see your post.. you are correct for gentoo. I just could rember the file name in gentoo so I gave the generic one I could remember.. for gentoo yours is the better solution.
  12. Thanks thanks for the Bug report.. I forgot to change the boot text to say linux not slax.. As I used a modified Slax script it makes the boot text.. I can fix that ... sorry I'll add that to my FAQ. its Problay the Fonts as My distro has its fonts in a diffrent place than gentoo and even if they are in the same place you probaly do not have the same ones installed. once you start KDE it takes over fonts from the X server so its not that big a deal if you were using TWM or EvilWM it would matter as your user or as root echo "exec startkde" > ~/.xinitrc .. if as root you need to re
  13. yes Xorg should still read the XF86Config-4 file and it shoudl still work (it did a few weeks ago..) but not the XF86config you have to boot the live cd.. good luck.. edit: sorry I missed JCL stating you must boot the cd..
  14. ok so graphics are screwy.. what is your viedo card ? a simple way to fix graphics problems in gentoo sinces is almost 100% a bad xorg.conf file. boot a live cd that you knwo works woth your system. copy its xorg.conf file over to the gentoo system. reboot and your graphics should work. the key to getnoo is That you built it and you knwo what you built (if you remember) you install Red Hat or something you have no ideal what was installed unless you did a package by package select. I don't see where you messed up. the graphics that look bad is just a missing config file (or something in it).

  16. DVR... mythtv (they even have a live cd already with hard drive install scripts..) pvr 250 is probaly the best card you can get.. the mythtv live cd is made to work with it out of the box..
  17. < Linux XP, the distro with Clippy > Ladies and gentlemen, I'm pleased to announce a new and improved Linux distribution, Linux XP! It is the distribution that has all the most popular features of Windows, combined with the stability of Linux. Here are some of the special features of Linux XP: Ease of use. One of the reasons why Windows is so popular is its ease of use. Some innovative improvements have been made to Linux XP. For example, many users find the permissions confusing, because it's weird that a normal user can write to only one directory. It's also confusing that only the roo
  18. which web server? apache has a how-to on their site.
  19. portage is simple.. emerge whatever.. or the hard part edit he file /etc/portage/package.keywords and add name of pacake and type for masked packages.. example echo "net-media/vlc ~x86" >> /etc/portage/package.keywords && emerge vlc which B card.. if you go to gentoo.org and look at online packages you can search to see if your driver is in portage.
  20. hee has'ent access been in beta for 10 years now
  21. The new OpenOffice 2.0 beta has a relational database like Access but can also plug into any other datat base you would like to use.. or just be used to set up relations and tables.. and then use it PhP or something to create web forms for access. best part is it's free..as in beer and as in speech.
  22. if you want a project and what to see hwo hard gentoo would be to get working.. download the install cd.. boot it .see if you have internet (or network connection) if so internet will work with it easy in gentoo. I love gentoo But I would not put it on a non-Linux persons PC.. for an older laptop I would try slackware.. it can still be a project .. but is easy to maintain..
  23. Heh. My understanding is that GCC doesn't schedule for the P4 at all. It does perform some instruction-level optimizations, but the code it produces is almost identical that produced for the (also unscheduled) i386 and i486 targets. you have to set more flags for the P4 .. anandtech has an story on what needs set to get the most out of a P4.. as to the last.. the P4m I have found to be much slower than a standard P4.. they lowered the L2 and L1 (at least in my laptop).
  24. I did find one problem on linux.. they only have RPM's now.. so if you run anything but Red Hat/SuSE/Fedora/Mandrake you are hosed... I have preparted the rpms to be installed on anyother linux distro.. www.iccaros-linux.org/downloads/OpenOffice_linux_friendly.tar.gz to install you can do one of two things.. do a tar -zxvf OpenOffice_linux_friendly.tar.gz and copy opt and usr to / or just untar it at / what did I do.. I used rpm2tar and created tar.gz files out of the rpms and then untarted them.. you can do this also.. you need to create the shortcuts in your memu but the things in the usr fo
  25. ok I have had my problems with OpenOffice.. I did not like the spread sheet program.. I did not like how it made my first letter a capital. I also had problems with everything looking so large.. their drawing program was horrable. the presenter was way behind koffice and MS office. no Access type program.. So what is this about.. Openoffice Bata 2.. is well outstanding.. first the drawing program is almost as good as VISIO and if I had my stenciles it would be in the " good enough" catagory. the writer.. is beyond god enough and in my openion has reached is as good. Calc .. 100% improvment.. f
