I have to finish these test and then test the server /firewall setting and then you'll havve access and add changes to any art if you like.

took me 18 hours on my amdk6 300 mhz with 128 megs ram... slackware is really easy .though, put in the disk and say install all, then pick the kernel it has highlighted and yoru good to go.. the hardest part is making and formatting partitions, slackware is missing any of the partitioning stuff

for a P2 your best bet is probaly slackware, gentoo or LFS but non are "easy" to install in a windows way. but all are easy to upkeep.

    Sshd Help

I'm getting confused and need some help. I have a mythtv server setup in a diffrent state. This is for preperation for my move to germany so I can get the TV shows I watch and sftp them to me. I use mythweb to control what is recorded. I use ssh for all other work like transcoding video to mpeg 4 for transfer and system administration. that all works great. my problem. every day at about 20:00 someone tries to hack my ssh login. they are going in in the wrong dirrection now and every time I block the incomming address on my firewall down there but I belive they are ip spoofing as at 20:00 the next day a differnt address tries the saem thing. everytime I track the address it to a bussiness in diffrent places. the current is korea and the other have been in new york. so while I only have one user name that can log in and a complex password (caps, nubers meta char and so on) I worry that one day they may guess my username and then my password. as its remote I can't just shut ssh off with a script because if anything goes wrong it may be days before I can talk some one into going to the box and mess with it (its my brother what does he care if I see my shows). so I what to set up a rsa ssh2 key log in with passphrase. so I have created the rsa keys I have placed the id_rsa.pub into my /home/user/.ssh/auterized_keys2 file I have tested and whtn I log in as that user from a user it the correct key in their folder it works .its ask for my passphrase and I am logged in. but If I ssh from say another box with ssh -l username (ipaddress) it ask for a password and im back to the same game as before. What I need to do is only allow rsa login. this way I can be sure that people can only log in who have my key and my passphrase. here is my sshd_config file please let me know what I am missing. # $OpenBSD: sshd_config,v 1.68 2003/12/29 16:39:50 millert Exp $ # This is the sshd server system-wide configuration file. Hp Or Ibm?

as long as the HP site says "HP recomends Windows XP" even in there HP-UNIX boxes I would stick with IBM.
  8. if you think its annoying now try it on dual monitors..

Linux still doesn't have write support for NTFS though. If you just need to access the partition(s) it's fine, otherwise FAT32 is your best bet. you can enable write support in the kernel .. but it may break it.. NTFS is a poor excuse for a FS.. I had a driver for winders that allowed it to read ext2,3 and reiserfs.. its beyond me why MS has decided not to support other filesystem. Its not liek they can't find out how they work like NTFS .
  10. I understand the frustration of OS you do not understand. but the new knoppix is really just point and click. I know of no reason to go the the command line unless you are tring to set up servers.. like ssh and ftp. try the new knoppix (2.8 I belive) also what does this mean.. "when i bought mandrake 9.1 the problem was the same xp wouldnt wouldnt allow the boot loader . and mandrake dissapeared off my compt ." Window swas spacifficly made to not dual boot with other operating systems.. its why IBM suied MS over OS/2 so problems dual booting Winders and any other OS is %100 microsoft. Lilo and Grub both can boot a windows OS and the Windows loader can be configured to boot lilo and grub. but you do have to go to a microsoft command line to set that up. this was written in 200 (way before mandrake 9.1) http://www.tweak3d.net/articles/multibootlinux/ I think you need to learn Google. or what ever I have been using linux since Red Hat 5.2 (yes way before broadband and before standaard internet.. most of it was bbs) and there was a lot of Linux documentation out then. But it is diffrent.. the problem most people have when they first use Linux is they expect it to be a Free windows.. But no one expect their Mac to be windows (and its based on unix) so why would Linux be like windows.?? Linux is not a free windows.. now people complian about software they mostly mean games.. I run UT2003 and 2004 , doom III (plus all dooms and quake) , and I run War Craft III through WineX .. how many linux games can windows run .. zero.. Linux can't run all windows games or even most of them.. but if it runs 1 its is 100% better at running others software. in linxu you should learn the command line.. if windows breaks adn yoru in a recovery console you have to learn command line fast. windows is based on dos which is a clone of CP/M. Linux is based on Minix which is a clone of Unix. they are so diffrent they can not be compaired. I think if you think of things in this light life will be much simpler.. If you have more questions please ask.. We love to help in the Linux world.. but you must post the error for us to fix the problem.
  11. any one know of a cheep ftp hosting site.. I would host it my self by last time I got hacked (my fault left Frontpage crap on ... ) they left Sick porn on the the server.. (not good porn I woudl like but child and other crap.) I had to get my Secuerity Clearance Re-done and it risked my job as I had to prove I did not do it my self.. so I'm a little afrade to do it.. but I may have to.. thanks for all the help
  12. PS. your problem sounds like a power managment problem with the old knoppix disk.. if you hit f1 at the boot: propt you should see options for turning it off.
  13. if you are trying to not get help.. well keep it up.. I asked that you post the error if you want help.. I have seen no error posted.. untill then non of us can help.. think of it this way.. Help my windows box will not boot.. it gives post error.. ?? and I hate windows it so hard to use...... with all the spyware and spam adn viruses.. see how little you can do with a psot like that .. We are willing to help just post the error...what did it say....
  14. " hi team ihave this knoppix disk which ive had for 1-2 years when i first got it i was able to get in and access it .but now i get an error message in the console screen .and i cant seem to access it." What error? and a 1 to 2 year old cdr may be bad.. plus a lot of changes to hardware have happened.. the knoppix you have may not reconize any of your new hardware,, "bloody linux it is a snobs sys.and ordinary users have to be a technician to get in there" not a good way to get help.. But I would rather have a set of users with a clue than a buch of untrainded point-n-click think they know about coupters scriptkiddies running around.. sorry that line kind of angered me.. linux is very simple point-and-click mostly.. know if knoppix is too hard try to make a windows bootable cd.. (not too easy and has no software) . my advice is please post the error you are gettting or try to boot with no APCI eneabled (hit f2 at boot:) or get a newer version of Knoppix or DSL or SLAX or what ever..
  15. " Does anyone know how to change a regular URL into the words "click Here" when sending a site by email. I don't mean for the message Boards but a regular email using Outlook Express Thanks Bryan " it may be for not, nay good email program will not render html and will just give the code, (Outlook is not a good email program, just ask the Department of home Land secuerity and the CIA). My point, you can spend the time to make a nice email with html but It may never be seen, (as a matter of fact My spam assasian rule set deleates html email as most of it is spam) just a though
  16. simple.. mozilla the open source project spun off of Netscape. like netscape Mozilla has a built in Address book and Email program. because of this its really big and takes a little longer than IE to start. Firefox. The web browser part of mozilla... with a little diffrent looks. they striped out the email program and the address book and made it as small as they can. (4megs for winders) Both are great , if you use some other mail program there is no need for mozilla, use firefox, if you do mail, IM and stuff Mozilla will do it all. The key point for Winders users is you will seperate your OS from the browser. Right now any exploit in IE is a secuerity threat to your entire OS.. not so with firefox or mozilla. Plus they both have tabed browsing-- no more starting a whole process to open mutilple webpages and saves memory. Native Popup blocker email program has build in spam protection. the last big plus is Firefox and mozilla will not allow programs to run from the internet.. SP2 did almost the same for IE , but if you tell it to run a program and not save it it will ask twice in IE and the second time let you run it.. tooooo easy for a hacker to change the pop up to say.. need a plugin-- then click now to run this plug in.. your infected. Firefox.. will never let you run it.. must save it first.. (then we hope you virus scan ) good luck
  17. I using the current one you made.. People seam to like it.. I'll send you a cd i fyou send me a pm.. with your address. I don't have a download site yet.
  18. jcl is right.. it sounds like you don't have the development packages installed. if you plan on compiling software (a lot of googd open source only comes in source code) then you need kernel source (some call it kernel development) Gnome Development Kde Development X11 development Pm me and I'll send you my binarys.. but they may not work.. or I can send you a beta cd that has gifff2lss and png2lss working on it.
  19. "..(fragmentation isn't as big of a problem in linux as with windows, right?" no most linux filesystems like ext3, reiserfs, xfs, and jfs all auto defrage them selves.. you get a max of about 3%.. but even that is normally fixed teh next mounting..
  20. thats cool.. good starting point (100% better than mine) ya png2lss is a pain gif2lss is easy http://freshmeat.net/projects/gif2lss/ command is gif2lss filename.gif > filename.lss you just untar it and do a make then cp the gif2lss file to your /usr/bin and then a chmod 777 /usr/bin/gif2lss now ready to use
  21. Ok I did some research..... and I can not repeate your problem as I understand.. So I would try this.. make a folder under your home folder and mount the NTFS drive under your home folder and see what that gets you.. please cut-n-paste any errors you find..
  22. http://handsonhowto.com/smb101.html this site may also help incase its your smb.conf file.. I think I'm confused on how you whared these..
  23. i think the nls=iso8859-1 may confuse winders.. but I could be wrong agian.. iocharset=name is what I thought it should be.. but if that does not wirk .. try mounting it in two places... mount it under your home folder and moutn it under mount.. (or make the softlink to the mnt folder) its a try.. I need to research as I hav enever used nls=iso8859-1 and its kind of messed my thinking up.. I set up a share tomarrow and test it..
  24. first JCL.. thanks for th escript but I have to agree. I was talking to a buddy of mine when SUDO hit me.. (we were talking about C code) I use it in my startgui script to allow the user to log in at init 3 and then run X while searching dev for the Video card. So I should of known... but I also Like your other way for systems with no SUDO installed. tictoc5150-- DOMINATRUX!!!!!! that cool make tha tthe "HACKER version with a buch of sysadmin tools.. I don't knwo ifI could look at TUX the same after I see Him/Her in bondage though..... but if you can play with the Two names I'm looking at.. here they go adn Why Iccaros Linux because Well Hitest liked it.. but the other is more geek like... I have a buddy comming out with a Pay for Linux (Proffesional Desktop stuff) called CLinux (since linux was created in the C language) so I thought I would spoof him (for fun and since mine is free...........) call it 'See'-Linux I know I'm a geek...... but if you can come up with some stuff to any fo the three (Ya DOMINATRUX!!!!!! may be cool... I'll have to pass it around and see but it may get as much attention as JESSUX did..) but the art I need.. Iccaros is a bad spelling of the Greek Myth of Icarus. I have used this name on the Inter-web for 10 years now.. so something Greek like.. for See Linux some good logos.. adn stuff have fun.. you will own it under the CC Linces, it just gives me the right to Give it away with my distro.. only you would have rights to sell it.. and the DOMINATRUX!!!!!! .. what ever you like.. the art needed is boot splash screen which is required to be 640X480x16 (yes 16 colors) and saved in lss format, source forge has lots of png2lss and giff2lss bmp2lss type tools. the kde boot screen if you look under your /usr/kde/3.3/share/apps/ksplash/Themes/Default you will see the diffrent formats needed. when this is past the first beta test I'll let you guys know and I'll mail any who want a copy a CD..
  25. "That'll be your legacy once your distribution takes off and challenges the other distros." Now thats funny..... I just want it to work ... But I like your thinking........WORLD DOMINATION...in a little box..
