  1. It's just that when he opens IE the home page(msn.com)is slow to load sometimes. Sometimes it won't load at all, it will say Page cannot be displayed and to check Internet Options. But most of thy time it's fast to load. I changed his home page to google and he said it changed back to msn, I didn't ask but I think it happens after a reboot. I used SpywareBlaster to lock the home page and the 3 buttons are grayed out now(Use Current, Use Default & Use Blank). He hasn't been on it today yet so I don't know how it's doing. I'll post back later and let you know. BTW, he's on cable with charter.
  2. I'm on my brother-in-laws PC and he thinks when you click on a link it should go to that site instantly. If it doesn't he keeps clicking(impatient). Everything seems ok to me. Here's what I've done. Ad-Aware scan>75 tracking cookies>MRU List>29=Fixed Spybot S&D scan>10 tracking cookies=Fixed PestPatrol scan>Ezula=Fixed Thanks! 4. A West Texas cowboy was herding his cows in a remote pasture when suddenly a brand-new BMW advanced out of a dust cloud towards him. The driver, a young man in a Brioni suit, Gucci shoes, Ray Ban sunglasses and YSL tie, leans out the window and asks the cowboy, "If I tell you exactly how many cows and calves you have in your herd, will you give me a calf?" The cowboy looks at the man, obviously a yuppie, then looks at his peacefully grazing herd and calmly answers, "Sure, Why not?" The yuppie parks his car, whips out his Dell notebook computer, connects it to his AT&T cell phone and surfs to a NASA page on the Internet, where he calls up a GPS satellite navigation system to get an exact fix on his location which he then feeds to another NASA satellite that scans the area in an ultra-high-resolution photo. The young man then opens the digital photo in Adobe Photoshop and exports it to an image processing facility in Hamburg, Germany. Within seconds, he receives an email on his Palm Pilot that the image has been processed and the data stored. He then accesses a MS-SQL database through an ODBC connected Excel spreadsheet with email on his Blackberry and, after a few minutes, receives a response. Finally, he prints out a full-color, 150-page report on his hi-tech, miniaturized HP LaserJet printer and finally turns to the cowboy and says, "You have exactly 1,586 cows and calves." "That's right. Well, I guess you can take one of my calves," says the cowboy. He watches the young man select one of the animals and looks on amused as the young man stuffs it into the trunk of his car. Then the cowboy says to the young man, "Hey, if I can tell you exactly what your business is, will you give me back my calf?" The young man thinks about it for a second and then says, "Okay, why not?" You're a Congressman for the U.S. government" says the cowboy. "Wow! That's correct," says the yuppie, "but how did you guess that?" "No guessing required." answered the cowboy. "You showed up here even though nobody called you; you want to get paid for an answer I already knew, to a question I never asked. You tried to show me how much smarter than me you are; and you don't know a thing about cows........ Now give me back my dog."
  5. Come to think of it, I got one of those Monk-E-Mails about a month or so ago and spam has picked up. I used to get spam occasionally(not much at all though) but now I'm getting 3-5 a day. Glad I saw your post because that might be the culprit. I think it's time for me to get MailWasher for a few weeks.
  6. I too remember il_wiccan from TechTV days. He gave excellent advice and still got a one star rating and loved it.... Happy Birthday! You are missed by many!
  7. Why Windows Vista Won't Suck http://www.extremetech.com/article2/0,1697,1931913,00.asp We know we titled this piece "Why Windows Vista Won't Suck" and that's a big statement to make. To be honest, we don't know that it's going to be great just yet. The OS is still very much in beta, and if previous Microsoft operating systems are any indication, a whole lot of things come together in the last few months. As such, we certainly can't recommend you set aside some upgrade money right now. Old Article, but worth reading.
  8. I realy appreciate it B! Thanks for the fast response! I thought it was probably NIS and RAM.
  9. I'm on a friends NEW PC(3 WEEKS OLD) so hope an expert can look at this soon. Spybot S&D found a few tracking cookies plus Wild Tangent. Did not fix Wild Tangent because I think HP comes with it? Ad-aware found a few tracking cookies too. CWShredder found nothing. NIS 2006 found nothing. I'm thinking NIS and only 256 of RAM is why this thing is so slow? Thanks! 16. A wise old Texas rancher went to town to trade for a pickup truck he saw advertised in the paper for an unbelievably low price. After showing the salesman which truck he wanted, they sat down to do the paperwork. The salesman handed the rancher the keys and the bill, to which the Texas rancher angrily declared, "This ain't the price I saw!" The salesman went on to tell the wise old Texas rancher how he was getting extras such as power brakes, power windows, special tires, etc. and that made the final price higher. The Texas rancher wanted only that truck and no other, so he begrudgingly paid the price and drove it home. A few months later, the salesman called the Texas rancher. "My son is in 4-H and he needs a cow for a project. Do you have any good cows for sale"? "Yep, I've a few good cows priced to sell at $500 each. Come on out and take your pick." The salesman said he and his son would be right out. After spending a few hours in the field checking out all the rancher's cows, they decided on one and the salesman proceeded to write a check for $500. "Now, wait a minute, that's not the final price of the cow. You're gettin' extras and you have to pay for those, too!" "What extras"? asked the salesman. "I think you'll find all you're gettin' listed here!" Basic Cow: $500.00 Two Tone Exterior: $45.00 Extra Stomach: $75.00 Product Storing Equipment: $60.00 Straw Compartment: $120.00 Four Spigots at $10 each: $40.00 Leather Upholstery: $125.00 Dual Horns: $45.00 Automatic Fly Swatter: $38.00 Fertilizer Attachment: $185.00 Grand Total: $1,233.00
  17. From an email I got. ------------------------------------------------------- How far we have come! The year was 1906 Show this to your children and grandchildren THE YEAR 1906 This will boggle your mind, I know it did mine! The year is 1906. One hundred years ago. What a difference a century makes! Here are some of the U.S. statistics for the Year 1906: ************************************ The average life expectancy in the U.S. was 47 years. Only 14 percent of the homes in the U.S. had a bathtub. Only 8 percent of the homes had a telephone. A three-minute call from Denver to New York City cost eleven dollars. There were only 8,000 cars in the U.S., and only 144 miles of paved roads. The maximum speed limit in most cities was 10 mph. Alabama, Mississippi, Iowa, and Tennessee were each more heavily populated than California. With a mere 1.4 million people, California was only the 21st most populous state in the Union. The tallest structure in the world was the Eiffel Tower! The average wage in the U.S. was 22 cents per hour. The average U.S. worker made between $200 and $400 per year. A competent accountant could expect to earn $2000 per year, a dentist $2,500 per year, a veterinarian between $1,500 and $4,000 per year, and a mechanical engineer about $5,000 per year. More than 95 percent of all births in the U.S. took place at HOME. Ninety percent of all U.S. doctors had NO COLLEGE EDUCATION! Instead, they attended so-called medical schools, many of which were condemned in the press AND the government as "substandard." Sugar cost four cents a pound. Eggs were fourteen cents a dozen. Coffee was fifteen cents a pound. Most women only washed their hair once a month, and used borax or egg yolks for shampoo. Canada passed a law that prohibited poor people from entering into their country for any reason. Five leading causes of death in the U.S. were: 1. Pneumonia and influenza 2. Tuberculosis 3. Diarrhea 4. Heart disease 5. Stroke The American flag had 45 stars. Arizona , Oklahoma, New Mexico, Hawaii, and Alaska hadn't been admitted to the Union yet. The population of Las Vegas, Nevada, was only 30!!!! Crossword puzzles, canned beer, and ice tea hadn't been invented yet. There was no Mother's Day or Father's Day. Two out of every 10 U.S. adults couldn't read or write. Only 6 percent of all Americans had graduated from high school. Eighteen percent of households in the U.S. had at least one full-time servant or domestic help. There were about 230 reported murders in the ENTIRE U.S.A! I forwarded this from someone else without typing it myself, and sent it to you and others all over the United States, possibly the world, in a matter of seconds! Try to imagine what it may be like in another 100 years.
  18. Happy balated Birthday Pat! & Mike. I didn't get online yesterday, well except for my daily devotions. It's a lot easier & quicker(for me)to read the Bible online in my condition. 23. Is the link supposed to support Firefox as faster? From the article: "So overall, Opera seems to be the fastest browser for windows." No, not at all. I put the link up to show that Opera is faster on Windows. Should have included this. 1.4 Which Browser is the Fastest? I've long felt that Opera 9 and K-Meleon were the two fastest browsers that I've used but this was purely subjective. At this site they put 24 Windows browsers to the test and the clear winner for speed is Opera. Well behind are IE 6 and Firefox, who overall perform rather similarly. Most of the browsers that use the IE shell such as Maxthon actually run a little slower than IE itself. Interesting stuff. From a Newsletter I get. Subscribe to Tech Support Alert for Free
