Fire Sale: Amazon Fire Phone Price Cut from $200 to 99 Cents

Oh, Amazon Fire Phone. It wasn’t so long ago that we all cared so much about you! Then the launch was met mostly with yawns from consumers, with a report last month claiming that Amazon only sold 35,000 Fire Phone units worldwide. In an attempt to fix that, today the company announced it was cutting its price by $200 after having only been on the market since July.

Amazon’s announcement tells us that the Fire Phone, which still packs 12 months of free Amazon Prime membership, will now cost 99 cents with the purchase of a two-year mobile service contract with AT&T. The announcement describes the contract with AT&T NEXT 18 service as costing $18.75 per month, though that figure doesn’t include taxes or fees or any of the other add-ons that typically show up on your mobile phone contract. Even still, it’s not too bad a deal for such a new device.

Ian Freed, Vice President of Amazon Devices, added this statement to the announcement of the Fire Phone’s new low price:

“Fire is now 99 cents with a two-year contract, plus customers get one full year of Prime included. With access to all of the Prime content, Mayday, 32GB of memory and free unlimited cloud storage for photos, plus the exclusive Dynamic Perspective and Firefly features, Fire is another example of the value Amazon delivers to customers.”

Of course, there are some customers who may not be feeling that value – namely, the aforementioned 35,000 or so customers who bought the Fire Phone for two-hundred dollars a little over a month ago. A $200 price drop less than two months after the device’s debut is some serious price cutting, and really reveals that, well, it’s probably not doing too well at all. It sure would be nice if Amazon announced some kind of loyalty program to users who shelled out the full $200 price for the Fire Phone – but as of now, there’s no such announcement accompanying the price drop news.

Did you buy a Fire Phone at full price? Are you going to buy one now that it’s only a buck? Let us know in the comments…we’d love to hear from you.
