It’s no secret that iPhones and iPads are popular machines. It’s also no secret that they’re touch-based keyboards are less than ideal when it comes to inputting a lot of text. So the fact that Nuance Communications, the makers of Dragon Dictation software for PC and Mac, created a free version just for iOS devices is a huge boost for those hoping to take notes without smashing their fingers into their screens. Dragon Dictation for iPad and iPhone works great.
The best feature of Dragon Dictation for iOS is pretty simple: it works. For years, dictation software had a tough time being able to accurately “hear” users speaking. But Dragon works really well without having to alter one’s regular speech patterns. As for punctuation, simply saying what you want—be it a comma, period, question mark, or exclamation point—and Dragon will hear you and insert them where you command. Just don’t talk about commas and the rest—you’ll have way more punctuation than you bargained for.
Dragon also has built-in social networking options, letting you dictate your next Facebook post or Tweet, and dropping it right in via your logged-in accounts. And if you want to keep your notes more private, you can also cut or copy text, or simply email it to a contact, or to yourself.
Dragon’s one catch? You’ve got to be connected to the Internet, either via Wi-Fi or mobile network. Otherwise, it simply doesn’t work. But considering that you can hardly go ten feet without finding a Wi-Fi network to jump onto, it shouldn’t be much of a problem.
- Easy-to-use interface and simple controls compliment extremely accurate voice-recognition capabilities.
- Great social network integration means hassle-free Tweeting.
- Cut and copy your text to use in word processing programs, bringing your words straight from your mouth, right onto the page.
