Debunked? Supplier Says No 4-Inch iPhone in the Works

Last month, a rumor started to swirl that Apple was getting ready to release a smaller version of its iPhone 6 with a 4-inch display, specifically targeted to folks with daintier hands – like, say, lady-type-folks. The rumor made some sense, but we hadn’t heard much one way or the other since then. Now, according to unnamed sources within the supply chain, apparently no such iPhone has been ordered.

A post on Macrumors points back to a post on G for Games, which itself points the way back to a post on Chinese site Feng.com (as of this writing Feng seems to be down or otherwise inaccessible). Feng cites sources within Apple’s supply chain who say that the iPhone hasn’t been ordered by Apple as of this time.

Macrumors transcribes some of the original post, translated from Chinese:

“Wei Feng network today through Apple’s supply chain has learned about the 4-inch screen iPhone 6s argument is just a hype.

Supply chain sources said that Apple has not made any new production tasks iPhone 4 inches to parts of the supply chain, and therefore will be launched on 4-inch screen Apple iPhone 6s argument is not true – at least so far.”

In truth, either rumor could just as easily be accurate. Neither one cites specific sources within the supply chain. Even still, it’s rare that rumors are debunked by other rumors, making it seem as though these latest reports that Apple hasn’t yet placed orders on a smaller iPhone 6 could be the real deal. On the other hand, that also leaves room for the order to still happen anytime in the near future. Considering the fact that Apple is putting out two different sizes for the Apple Watch, it’s clear that the company is aware of its customers’ preferences when it comes to size.

I still think that we’ll see that smaller iPhone revealed before too long. But for now, the rumor that it’s coming soon is even sketchier than it was before.
