Bump and Flock Apps Being Discontinued This Month

In September 2013, the mobile app team that created Bump and Flock announced that they had joined Google to continue their work of “helping people share and interact with one another using mobile devices.” Their most popular app, Bump, was used to digitally share contacts and other data on your phone to the phone of a friend by bumping the devices together. Flock was created for easy photo sharing.

As of yesterday afternoon, the team announced that, due to their focus on “new projects within Google,” Bump and Flock will be discontinued. On January 31, 2014, both apps will be removed from the Apple App Store and Google Play Store.

But don’t think downloading it now puts you in the safe zone – the team made it clear that, after the aforementioned execution date, both apps will cease to function and user information will be deleted.

However, the company has built-in features in Bump and Flock to export and save your data for future use. Simply put, in the next 30 days, open either app and follow the given instructions for exporting your data via email.

David Lieb, CEO and cofounder of Bump, made brief note of how humbled they were at the success and popularity of their apps.

“Over the years, we’ve been inspired and humbled by the millions of people who have used Bump and Flock. Your feedback, enthusiasm, and support has brought much meaning to our work, and we want to thank you all for that. In many ways, Bump was a revolutionary product that inspired many subsequent advances and helped push the world forward. We hope our new creations at Google will do the same.”

If you’d like to grab any data you might have stored in Bump or Flock in the past, the apps can be downloaded here and here.
