Barnes & Noble's 10.1-Inch Galaxy Tab 4 Nook On Sale Today

When I think “Nook,” I think “handily whooped.” The line of entertainment-focused tablets from Barnes & Noble has never really caught on, facing stiff competition from products like iPads, Android tablets and Amazon Fire slates. That apparently has not stopped Barnes & Noble, however; the company rolled out a 7-inch Galaxy Tab 4 Nook two months ago (with a little help from Samsung, of course). And now B&N is launching a 10.1-inch model of that same tablet.

The specs on the larger Galaxy Tab 4 Nook aren’t great. The display is a fairly outdated 1200×800, a.k.a. nowhere close to “Retina” level resolution. Storage isn’t all that mind-blowing either — it’s 16 GB, which is standard on entry-level tablets, but won’t hold large libraries of music, movies and TV shows.

Where the Galaxy Tab 4 Nook does try to set itself apart is on price. The tablet will go on sale at Barnes & Noble stores at a “special introductory price” of $299. That is not a bad price for a 10-inch slate, though for $100 more, you begin to enter the territory of tablets like the Nexus 9 and the newly discounted iPad Air, which boast much better specs.

Worse yet, the iPad mini 2 starts at $299. Sure, you sacrifice some screen real estate, but you get a much higher resolution display (and other improved specs) as a result. And let’s not forget to mention Amazon’s Fire tablets, which, with the exception of the 8.9-inch HDX, all come in under $200. So where the Galaxy Tab 4 Nook tries to set itself apart, it ultimately comes up short.

The Galaxy Tab 4 Nook goes on sale today. Check your nearby Barnes & Noble, or visit the B&N website. But, based purely on hardware and price, your dollars will probably be better spent elsewhere.
