How To Disable Menu Bar Transparency in OS X Yosemite

In OS X it used to be that you could turn off the transparency effect on the OS X menu bar via the Desktop and Screen Saver section in System Preferences. That isn’t the case anymore in OS X Yosemite as Apple has removed that option (sort of — I’ll explain below). Here is how to disable the transparency effect for the menu bar in OS X Yosemite.

In System Preferences > Accessibility > Display, enable the “Reduce transparency” option.

Note: This setting disables transparency across [...]

This Is the Coolest Drone In the World and You Can Own It for $499

If you ever wished a theme song played as you walked down the street, this new product I’m about to share will be right up your alley. No, it’s not a flying speaker that follows you around, though I have a feeling that’s certainly possible now with this invention. It’s a flying camera that follows you around and shoots 1080p 60fps video. It can also shoot in slo-mo at 120fps in 720p. What is this new magical device? It’s called the Lily and it looks insanely awesome.

How to [...]

What to Do If Google News Isn’t Indexing Your Site

I’m writing this because this recently happened to us here at BestTechie after we pushed our redesign live — all of the sudden our latest content stopped appearing on Google News. “What gives?” I thought. The weird thing to me was that for a few days after the redesign went live our articles were still being indexed, nonetheless, suddenly they just stopped showing up. Like any publisher, I was determined to fix it.

Below I’m going to outline various things I tried to get our content back into the [...]

How To Backup Your Apple Watch (It Couldn’t Be Easier)

Apple has made it extremely easy to backup your Apple Watch, in fact, it’s so easy that you don’t even have to do anything. Your Apple Watch will automatically backup to your companion iPhone. So whether you backup your iPhone to iTunes or iCloud it will have the latest data from your Apple Watch and can be easily restored.

According to an Apple support document published today, here’s the types of data that is (and isn’t) included in your Apple Watch backup.

All Customer Service Should Be Like This

Yesterday I had jury duty for the first time in my life. Yesterday was also the day I was expecting my Milanese Loop band to be delivered from Apple. So as you can imagine the fact that I knew when I got home yesterday I’d be welcomed by my shiny brand new Apple Watch band is what kept me sane throughout the day at jury duty.

Anyway, at about 3PM I got a notification saying it had been delivered. Yay! When I finally got home, I went directly to the package room and started looking around for the delivery…only I [...]

The Next Apple TV Remote Will Be Radically Different

The original Apple TV remote (left), next to the current Apple TV Remote (right).

The first Apple TV remote was small, white plastic device with a handful of buttons. That remote was phased out by the current remote that ships with Apple TV’s, the current one is the one most people are familiar with: thin and silver with a few black buttons — just the right amount to make it useful and intuitive. This is by design.

The New York Times is now reporting that the new Apple TV remote, which [...]

How To Rip A DVD to Your Mac

We’ve all been there (or you may be there right now if you are reading this): you want to rip a DVD you own to your Mac so you can watch it without having to pop in the disc every time. Ripping a DVD will also allow you to put the movie on a mobile device such as your iPhone or iPad so you can watch it on-the-go.

I’m going to outline the steps on how to rip a DVD to your Mac below, but before I begin, you need to keep in mind that new Mac’s no longer have optical drives. This is normally a good thing because it [...]

Here’s How Lefties Can Use the Apple Watch

Are you a lefty? Nice! Me too. If you recently bought an Apple Watch or are scoping one out fear not, you don’t have to twist your hand in uncomfortable directions to use the latest Apple gadget. Apple thought of everything when it comes to people using its Watch. You can adjust the Orientation of the Watch in the Settings app (on the Watch).

In order to adjust the orientation, in Settings go to General, then tap Orientation, and from there select the wrist you will be wearing the Watch on (for us lefties that’s [...]
